Setting up a D9200 using EasyMameCab Directions
« on: August 07, 2003, 03:15:10 pm »
I'm setting up my D9200 with a Trident Blade T64. I used the directions on the easymamecab website to center using the 3 modes.

Once this is done, should all my games fill the screen? (obviously, not pacman, and other vert games)

What reference games can I check against to make sure everything is running correctly on all the modes?

Yes, they should all fill the screen.  Every horizontal game should look and run perfectly.

Reply from the Man himself, thanks.

I set my monitor using the advcfg.exe per your instructions. When I use the monitor controls to fit the reference image on screen, do I want to make it max, i.e. try to get the edges as close to the edge of the monitor as possible?

Here's what I've noticed after doing that. Some horizontal games do not fill the screen horizontally, and the ones that don't aren't always centered in middle of the screen.

Most of the vertical games seem to run off the top and bottom. I readjusted the height when Ms. Pacman was running, but it still doesn't seem "perfect".

Have I just missed something?

Thanks.

Rerun easycab and select reconfigure.  This will restore all the default settings.  Then using your arcade monitor controls, center the following games

gauntlet
720 degrees
asteroids

That should do it.  Let me know how it goes.

desmatic, I know your the advancemame expert here so here goes.  Have you noticed that begining with version .68 some vertical games, ms. pacman in particular and games with the same res. now want to display in the 25khz range instead of 15.75khz range?  I think it has to do with the display_adjust yclock replacing display_adjust auto setting.  I am using a d9200 with trident blade t64.  No matter what I do, I can't get these games to display back in the 15.75khz range like they did in advancemame .67.  Do you have any idea about this phenomenon at all?  For this reason, I have stayed with .67, where I have all the games displaying correctly.

Ya, I recall running into similar issues.  I can't really recall what exactly I did, but I did manage to come up with a work around.  As I'm away from my cabinet right now, I won't be able to look up the answer for a few days.  I'll post the solution as soon as I can, probably friday or there abouts.

If you could, that would be great.  I have tried just about everything to no avail.  Thanks desmatic

Actually, scratch that.  Use a vclock of 50-70 instead of 50-60.

Yep, that definetly did the trick.  I guess you haven't noticed any problems with any other games bringing the vclock down to 70 from 90?  I haven't had a chance to check it out yet.  Advancemame can be a pain in the behind sometimes.  When you get a chance, you should update your site with the change.  It's such a great source of advancemame info!

Sorry, for such a late reply, but I've been drowned in distractions recently, and haven't had the time to do much of anything, much less surf my favorite boards.

But to answer your questions, it shouldn't have any off effects, but I'll do the calculations and let you know for sure.  Theoretically speaking, any game with over 288 rows should just kick into a 25kHz mode.

I guess this whole mess was caused by an oversight when I redid easycab.  I narrowed the horizontal clock range, as I didn't think it need to be that big.  But apparently I overlooked that 288 column tid bit.  I'll fix it in the next release though, so thanks for bringing it to my attention.  Hopefully, in the next week or two I'll find the time to update easycab to .72.

I just set my vclock to 50-70 and that fixed all my problems too. More of my games run at 16khz now and look really good.

Thanks for the advice.

I've updated EasyCab to .73.  The new version solves all the 15kHz vertical game problems.  Unfortuneately, since the default configuration files have changed you need to select reconfigure after you update your system, otherwise the changes won't take effect.  You will also need to recenter your setup using your arcade monitor controls.

The new changes should make it so that all vertical games with less than 288 columns play at 15kHz. 288 and higher default to 25kHz or 31kHz.  There were also a few modifications made to the d9200 modeline.  The changes improved graphics performance for Trident's BladeT64 and fixed an anoying color instability in mk3.

For perfect easy centering, just center the following games using your arcade monitor controls:

Gauntlet
720 Degrees
Asteroids

Geeze, everytime I go to update my cab its another reconfigure issue.  I hope in changing advancemame so much they are actually making it better.  Its becoming a real pain to update to the latest versions because you have to fix so much.  I just installed 0.76 up from 0.70 and I have to fix everything all over again.

I know it's frustrating, but the source of the problem pretty much lies in the development of low level video card drivers.  There is very little documentation to work with when writing these drivers, and even when there is, it's fairly skilled work.

Hopefully, the recent adoption of framebuffer devices by the Linux kernel devs, will fuel faster, more useful low level drivers that AdvanceMAME can take advantage of.  Until then, it's very much a wip, not unlike mame, where sometimes a bug fix breaks something unforseen.

It's always a good idea to keep a backup of your advmame.rc, so that if something is broken in the current release, you can just wait for a fix to come along.

BTW, If you're using a D9200, then the config file on my site should pretty much do it.   If you try it out and something doesn't look perfect, please let me know.  I'll try and figure out what's wrong.

That's exactly what I planned to do :)!!  Seriously, if it weren't for you I would be pretty much screwed with advancemame.  I've become more familiar with it, but like I said with all the changes, you seem to be the only person who knows what's up!!!

Thanks again!!!
