50 inch rear pro sit down cabinet and candy cab and sf2 pin.
« on: August 05, 2010, 02:57:00 am »
Hey, new guy here, just purchased this beast and am awaiting arrival in 3 weeks time

my first project, was going to go smaller ie 33 inch, but i have no large doors so that wasn't option, and since this machine seperates into 3 its fine. reason i wanted something decent sized is i'm making light gun games a priority (have 2 ems top guns on the way hope they were the best choice)

so anyway thought i'd check with the pros before ordering the other bits so far i (think) i need:

jpac
arcade vga

and thats it?

i have the computer sorted 3.2 ghz 2 gig ram, also will be going with hyperspin as a front end

so basically any thoughts, opinions are appreciated, cheers guys

(sorry if i have broken any forum rules, never know what ya getting into sometimes  :) )

Welcome to the forums, and to your new addiction :)

Cool looking cab - what are your plans for it? Restore to original state or modify it and make it your own?

Assuming the gear on that rig is fairly standard you'll need a keyboard encoder (ipac, keywiz, etc). Do you know anything about the monitor in there? Is it in good shape, and is it an arcade monitor vs. TV?

Looks like you could do some badass things if you redid the cab with a custom exterior, new controls, etc.

If you are new to the hobby the best advice I can give is to browse the forums and read everything you can.

Tell us more about your plans!

Thanks mate. Ah keyboard encoder i'd be going with jpac since its jamma.

As for the monitor i'm not too sure but i'm fairly sure it's a tri-sync arcade monitor. If not that a dual-sync. I'm pretty sure it's a locally made machine (new zealand) coin cascade or something

Other plans could include painting but will have to see as it's pretty massive and would be a mission to move. Also will upgrade the cp to all sanwa. Don't like the look of those bat tops :) . Still thinking about a name, any suggestions are appreciated.

I'l add more once I've got it. Put some good photos up.

If anyone has links to any similar projects that ie megalo 2's etc that would be cool can't find much like it anywhere.

For names what you guys think of "MAMEMOTH" on account of it's size. Not a moth themed machine lol

Personally, I would do a restore and just use a J-Pac in it, but it's your cabinet, so do your thing. Here's some more info on it: http://www.hard--candy.com/index.asp?page=Super+Megalo+2

Hey mate,

I live in Christchurch and bought the same sit down console from Coin cascade while ago, it didnt come with the tv though. I stripped it out, replaced all buttons, added ipac etc, new seat cusion, mats and had some of the panels painted.

Here's a couple of photos to show you how it came up

Cheers, Luke

sweet man looks mint.

yeah i'l wait till it comes to see if the cabinet needs a restore paint, moneys not a big issue but don't want to end up spending a deposit on a house  :-\  the seat cushion deifinitely needs replacing though.had offers from some pretty good airbrush artists last night so that might be an option, big akuma mural would be cool.

good to see a kiwi here man, prob a few others too around, i'm in palmerston north.

So, the machine finally arrived today, jesus it's massive, fairly happy tbh, the actual cabinet is a bit rough, nothing major tho, the screen is in pretty good shape tho, no noticable burnin, and pretty bright even in light.
Plenty of space for a pc and there's even a jug cord wired in ready to go.

Sorry about the pic quality, taken on the cellphone, i'l take some good photos and get it up soon

Would be awesome if you installed an LCD screen in that huge area above the joysticks in the control panel. You could have the frontend put artwork or control panel layouts on it.

that area would probably be great for a trackball, however it might be difficult to reach while sitting.  nice cabinet by the way, that thing is huge.

Yeah I I have the seat attached now but not sure i'l leave it on, after a few long marvel v capcom marathons it kills my back.

Heres a pic of the cp as it is. It's bloody ugly lol. And the metal can be pretty cold and uncomfortable. Any suggestions as to what to do from here? I was considering getting a piece of mdf and putting that across it but I dunno.

Thanks man yeah it is huge, massive work just to get it it inside haha.

you could always cut some plexi to cover the metal panels.  either put some artwork under it, or do what i like to do and just spray paint the back side of the plexi black for a nice glossy finish.

Yeah I considered that too, do you just need to make a template and get them to cut the holes etc?

i'd probably remove the metal panel and trace it onto a piece of wood/MDF so you end up with a wooden template that is the same size as your metal panel. then clamp your plexi to the wooden template and use a flush trim or pattern bit in a router to cut the plexi to shape.  then lay your metal panel on top of your new plexi panel to mark the bolt holes and drill them out.

Oh ok, I don't think I want to use the original layout might get a piece of mdf and trace out something new. Thanks for the tips tho mate.

What would be the best idea for removing the  art stickers on the monitor sides? Would attacking it with an orbit sander be fine? Might crack into it this weekend.

Yeah It was pretty much bought on a whim, not sure what i'l do with it. Once i'm finished the big one i'l get into it. I was thinking of turning the screen horizontal (assuming its possible) and making it a 360 based machine, maybe a mvc theme it has a 60 in 1 in it which will be sweet untill I start on it

Hey mate, what I did with mine - I took the existing cracked plexi control panel covers to a plastic manufacturer (who make brochure/sunglasses stands) and they just copied them - pretty easy.

I'm sure there's someone up north who can do the same. just make sure they dull the edges down otherwise it can scratch your wrist etc.

Cool second cab also - don't see many of those around here :-)

Sweet I will look into it. Prob have to wait since I bought that candy. Came up for 700 nz, just couldn't help myself. I got an email saying he's got a 2 player 6 button inlay for it he'l throw in and that the monitor does rotate. Still finding out if about the model tho. Haha. Possibly a mistake but these don't come up often so I thought what the hell. Could be a long shot but big fingers crossed it's a trisync with a vga cable. Still waiting on an email.
If anyone knows what it is feel free to chime in :)

Depending on space I'd put a screen in the centre above the joysticks. Makes a portable unit all in one.

SWEET JESUS, that thing is huge, but it looks awesome.

@amendonz
congrats on the candy. If you're gonna make it a 360 machine you should definitely leave the monitor vertical. There are so many great jap shmups out. You're probably into fighters though if you were thinking about going horizontal.

I like the odd vertical game but yeah you guessed it, fighters mostly, I guess the theme of the pin might give something away. Not sure what your idea of portable is lol, just that bit alone is dam heavy. But i'm still tossing up the screen idea.

another crappy update...

sold the big 50 inch, just couldn't be bothered with the effort it would take to get it nice, and since i'm only renting, albiet in a long term rental, i don't want to be lugging it round in the future...

In good news MY SF2 PINBALL ARRIVED!!!

i know these don't get much love on the net but i gotta say i really enjoy it, i never played a lot on pinball growing up, although i did used to play a lot of pc pinball games as a kid, but i can't get enough of it, great fun.

also still procrastinating on the Candy, all the Sanwa stuff is in but the monitor still isn't rotated, but doesn't matter because i have to wait a couple more weeks and i will be receiving a Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo PCB, A & B Boards, one of the greats imo, got an awesome deal from an aussie cps2 collector

sweet,

Aaron
