how do i hide unused roms in the games list ?
« on: August 02, 2010, 07:49:45 pm »

hi,

ive been at M.A all day and night setting things up , and so far im doing ok  :-\
but the one thing thats doing my head in , is the fact that i have extra rom files showing up in the games list  :banghead:

an example :
i have gng and gnga roms , aka ghosts n goblins set.
gnga is the rom which is used to launch ghosts n goblins , but the problem is that the gng rom shows up in the list, without a snap.
i have to have gng in the roms folder because the game is a 2 part rom set and it wont work without it .
how do i sort out these roms from showing up in the list ? cheers.

and secondly , its not exactly M.A related , but i'll ask as someone will know ,
why is it , if you re-name the rom to ghosts n goblins , it wont work at all ?
i tried renaming several different others , eg , avsp was renamed to aliens vs predator etc etc and they just wouldnt work.

it just looks so untidy on the games list with the original rom file names .
im also depending heavily on the snap image to tell me what game is what and its a bit of a mare tbh.
any help or tips much appreciated :)

I may be a jackass , but im no fool !

ok ive figured out the problem  :P

because i want alot of games to be playable, i set up 2 versions of mame on my cab.
and the reason why the duplicates and other roms were showing was because i had mame set up in different emulator slots.
i.e - i was using the msx 1.0 and 2.0 as mame 1 and mame 2 . hence i wasnt getting any joy with the name of each rom and
why duplicates were showing up.

i checked the mame emulator slot on M.A and tested it , and yes, the roms are showing up as proper names under that section.
also, the duplicates and the remaining sets are hidden. so i think i'll use the mame emulator list for version 1 of mame and msx 2.0 for mame 2.

the reason is, is because i use mame ver 118 as the main source because it plays most of my roms.
and i found that ver 136 and mame32 play my other rom's that cannot be played on ver 118 . so hence the 2 emulators.
wish M.A would come with another slot for mame , would be so handy .

thanks for the help anyways nicky , most appreciated  ;D

You should check out Multimame.  http://multimame.wikidot.com/

A few of us plan to start a thread soon on how to set it up as we figure it out.  But feel free to dive into it and post your findings.

cheers for that del

at the moment , ive worked it out that im going to use 3 versions of mame in total.

the mame slot will house ver136b and will play street fighter games only.
msx slot 1.0 will house ver118
msx slot 2.0 will house mame 32.

the reason ?
well , v118 plays my games in 4:3 aspect only through MA.
whereas mame32 will stretch the screen to fit the 16:9 aspect.
so ive created 2 slots , which are mirrored ( same roms in each slot ) and i can choose to play the game
in eye watering full widescreen mode , or , play it in an aspect which is easy on the eyes , eg 4 : 3.

im getting close to finishing off my custom theme so all i have left to do now is get MA to autoboot  ;D  :gobama

dump a shortcut in the startup folder and your finished! lol

Any chance of a YouTube vid or some pics on here? I wanna see the 3 mames in action and this custom theme, lol

Personally, I don't like the huge black bars you get on widescreen monitors when playing the games in 4:3, but I'm still not sure if I'm all that keen on the stretched image.

Maybe I need a new monitor :P

yep , i will be posting a vid as soon as i can .

but just to warn you all , its nothing great :
the custom theme isnt much , i just changed the overall background pic and the emulator screens are changed. so its nothing too fancy .
its just i dont like following the same old ding dong so i like to modify pretty much everything i get my hands on , if possible.
at least it'll be different :)

and as for the stretched image :
if i was building another cab in the morning , i would definately get a real arcade monitor to cut out all the crap of different monitor resolutions.
i have a 24" lcd in there and i swear, its way too big length-wise . i really should have opted for a 4 : 3 monitor .

i also need some pointers on how to sort out adding some text in MA so i'll make a new thread for that now :)

yeah, i'd love to have a 20+ inch 4:3 monitor, but there so hard to find and pretty expensive on ebay.
I'm coping with my 27" LCD TV but it's widescreen, so I've got my images stretched atm.

When I get round to building my cab, I'm probs just gonna stick that TV there and base it off either the Vewlix or Virtua Fighter 5 cabs.

Not gonna be for another few month yet though, lol

well at least you'll have plenty of time to " think over " your options  ;D

i kinda rushed this project to get it over and done with .
while filming the making of my build , i was just in the " get it done " mindset and was only planning the build in my head or as i went along.
although i usually do sit down and sketch things out , i mostly tend to veer off course and let fate decide the outcome !! hehe.

but plan well ahead of time anyways and you should be fine :)

For anyone looking for these, check out www.freecycle.org.  I just checked, metallimaniac, and Newcastle, UK has a group in your area.  Basically, people offer (or post 'wanted') up things that they no longer require.  I'm in Ontario, Canada, and I can tell you that in the past year that I've been a Member (it's FREE!) that I have seen more than five 20"+ Monitors being offered.  Now that I know they're worth, and since I've started thinking about building my project, I'll be watching intently!!!

cheers nicky

i have only made 8 emulator screens in MA though . and i dont plan on adding much more to it.
so i think people may find my theme a bit of a let-down if they want to use it themselves .

however , i may add some more to it and then upload it with a warning ,
" only use if you only like playing mame and playing music " , lol :)

So, apologies if someone said this already, but I didn't see it...

You can make a favourites list for each emulator... on my cabinet (I have a lot of friends using it) I have taken games I know work well, and moved them over to the 'favourites' list... and then since that is the last list used, it appears when people go to it at parties... and since I don't have the keyboard handy, they can't jump back into normal list. (I forget the number that adds a game to favs... 5-9... one of those buttons). You hit one of them, and it'll say like "MAME      Favorites", pick favs and hit start... and then I think you hit 5 to jump between the lists... (I changed the keys on mine since there was conflicts...)

Also, I'm not sure HOW you're changing the name of the game... if you change the name of the actual ROM files, MAME won't know what to do with the game. You should be able to Control-P, and in one of the list windows, change the name of how they're displayed... I've got all mine changed to nice names "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time (4 Player)", etc
