Help getting my TV to work in my mame cabinet.
« on: August 02, 2010, 11:04:06 am »
Hello eveyone.  I have been using a flatscreen lcd pc monitor in my mame cab but I am now trying to use a 27in TV.  The tv is a Sony trinitron.  I hooked the tv up using a S-video cable.  The video card in the pc is a Nvidia 9500 GT.  I turned the pc on and the boot up process displayed on the tv.  It gets the the windows XP screen and then the tv goes black and displays what input it is set to ( Video 1).  Anyone know whats going on?

I booted the computer in safe mode and then windows is displayed fine.  I also booted the pc in VGA mode and it works fine but mame will not work in either of these modes.

It seems like the resolution of the tv and computer are not cooperating together.  Hope someone can help

Thanks
Alex

If your display in safe mode was OK it is 800 x 600 resolution.   You should set the resolution of your computer when not in safe mode to 800 x 600 so that your TV can display the screen.   If you go above that it looks like your TV cannot display it and goes blank.

i tried setting it to 800x600 and I get still the black screen.  I have been messing with it tonight some more and i did get a picture but it is horrible.  I got an image to come up set at 640x480-16 colors-default refresh.  but it wont even load maximus arcade in that setting.

I will keep trying.  Hope to hear some more advice.

Try clicking on control panel and then display. under display click on change display settings then advanced settings then choose adapter.  You can then list all modes which should give you one that your tv can use.  The lowest on mine was 640 by 480.  If you need something lower you are going to have to use some software like powerstrip or soft15.  I would think that your TV should be able to show 640 x 480.

Hook a monitor up and make sure you have TV output enabled (clone display). During BIOS and  even during the windows boot screen it'll show on the TV but unless you have it enabled in the nvdia driver it wont show on the TV. This is what I had to do with my set up.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

+1  Malenko....Also, I don't know what type of OS you had, but when I was experimenting, I tried TINYXP(64bit)...and it setup my PC for pal video output.  Until I got it sorted out, I had the same symptoms as you.

My video card has 2 dvi and 1 svideo outputs.  I keep the computer monitor hooked up to the dvi output and the tv to the svideo output.  When I go into the display settings i try to set up multiple displays it doesnt recognise the tv and it wont let me do it.

I have made a little bit of progress i did get windows to show after the boot screen and display the desktop on 2 different resolutions in the adapter tab by selecting 640x480-16 colors-default refresh and 800x600 16 colors-default refresh.

other than those 2 resolutions nothing else has worked and those 2 resolutions are so bad that mame and maximus arcade will not load let alone barely being able to see anything.

I appreciate all of the help guys!

Ok after a few more hours i finally got it i had to use a driver for my card that is fairly old to get it to work.  :applaud:   On to the next problem everything that is being displayed is too big to fit on the screen.  I have teh resolution up as high as it will go at 1024 x 768.  To explain a little better in windows desktop i cant see the start button on the bottom left corner  because the image is too big.  Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks again
Alex

In the Nvidia control panel there should be settings for adjusting the 'overscan'. That's what you need to change.

you could try going into right clicking on desktop and go into properties. Somewhere there should be a way to decrease the font size. That may be it. I had to increase mine to make windows readable on my TV, but If it's increased too much things get cut off.
