Rotating monitor
« on: July 21, 2010, 06:32:35 pm »
This may be a stupid question, but I'm new to this so bear with me. I have a Tetris machine that I purchased, unfortunately the monitor appears to be in sideways. Do I have to do some crazy wiring to fix the problem? Or can I just simply rotate the monitor itself onto its side. Here's a picture to clarify.

tetris may not be the original game for that cabinet....?

if the mounting hardware is present for a horiz mount , no prob.

if not, you'll need to modify it to accomodate the required position ( i.e. a little work )

Yeah, I really don't think it was the original game. My understanding is that the Tetris games were only upgrade kits. The mounting hardware isn't present, but modifying the inside of the cabinet seems like the best idea. I was mostly concerned about if there would be an issue with rotating the monitor onto its side.

Typically a monitor can be mounted either for horizontal (as tetris should have) or vertical (how yours currently is)
You should be able to turn the monitor on its side.
your main obstacle will be the actual wood framing of the cabinet. you will probably have to pull out the framing that the monitor fixes to and rotate it also.
sometimes after rotating the monitor, you may need to degauss it, but not always

I finally rotated the monitor and it works great...except there's discoloration on the left side now. I assume degaussing the monitor will fix this, however  I don't have a degaussing coil. Any idea where I could buy one (any stores carry them like Home Depot?), or a cheap alternative.

all u need is a strong alternating (electro)magnetic field.
which a degaussing coil provides.
one from an old tv might work in a pinch ( a little weak )
or http://electronics.mcmelectronics.com/search?af=&w=degaussing+coil

or wind ur own ....

sometimes you can get by with holding the butt of a soldering gun up to it (a gun, not iron) or possibly a drill.
I use a bulk tape eraser and it works great. I bought a realistic bulk tape eraser for $10 on craigslist.
its easy to use. while the eraser is close to the screen, push the button, make big circles and move farther from the csreen and release the button.
the whole procedure should be around 5 seconds
