Fixing monitors with corner color probs..
« on: August 04, 2003, 10:48:13 am »
I now have 2 monitors that have bad color in the top left corner.

Is there any way to fix this?

I tried a maginet and move the bad color around.  It helped (a lot actually) but I could never remove it all.

Thanks!

Hi,
How did you degauss the tube ?  Use a degauss coil if you can find one or make one.  It sounds like you moved the polarized section around and did not remove it.  Long and short your tube is still magnetized.  Using a coil plugged into AC, wave it slowly by the tube in the position you will mount/use it in (the screen will get heavy red) , then flip the switch and wave the coil around the tube and slowly and consistently move away from the tube. You need to evenly polarize the tube then using the opposite charge evenly unpolarize it. You may have a purity problem also...Does red fade out in certain places ?
If you have a local TV repair shop they will certainly have a coil.  If you make a coil be careful !!! ;)

Surprisingly, a soldering gun works as a quick and (if you already own one)cheap degaussing tool. While most guns don't have the "oomph" of a degaussing coil, I have found it works most of the time (and handy in a pinch).

I thought of that, but how would you change the polarity once the tube is magetized ?  Could you turn the plug on a non-polarized outlet ?
Thanks,
Tom

Duh  :P I answered my own question.  Its AC so its not polarity it is field intensity.  The switch on my coil is only on/off. So a strong soldering iron would work...I gotta try that. Thanks that's good stuff !!!

Whats the soldering iron solution?

I was about to go buy one soon (I have two small projects that require one... but nothing urgant.  And I don't have access to one at work).

Just wrap the cord around the monitor then plug it in?

Also, now much do the degausing coils cost (about)?

Thanks!

No, not an soldering iron, but a soldering gun. Squeeze the trigger, and it becomes a poor man's degaussing tool. Use it like a degaussing coil (following Tom's instructions) and those corner colors should be history.

Good luck!

A big drill or other item with a fairly large AC motor will work as well.  The windings on the motor act as an electromagnet.  Make sure you take the bit out so you don't put unintended holes in your anatomy.  ;D

Also make sure you have access to the real deal though, just in case you make it worse. :)
