midway space invaders cocktail
« on: July 06, 2010, 02:43:39 pm »
so took delivery of a midway space invaders cocktail today.had ideas of converting it to galaga (my holy grail) but,i am going to breathe some life into this baby and hopefully give it a second life as an invaders.

so just what have i got?

heres some side shots:

so its got a 1 coin slot coin door all wired up working,us coin mech by looks of things.the grills and the coin door will be shot blasted, the grills will be powder coated and the door i will spray satin black.the side door which house the boardset has the same original key.some twonk took black spray to it and tried to spray the corners and got black spray in areas they shouldnt have,so i had to clean up the laminate a bit, also the boardset door had silver spray all over it for some unknown reason, hence the need for me to get rid of that,i have had good go at cleaning it up but, still needs more.theres just a small chunk of laminate missing from the bottom of the coin door side.the legs need a small amount of gluing and filler and repainting.

control panels:

say no more!both control paddles are knacked and the control panels are suffering with rust and wear.they will be shot blast, primed and i will have to buy repros cpo's (if available) will check on that in future, same as buying new paddle controllers.

moving onto the top glass:

no reproduction underlays here, thats all original and thats 30 years of wear.will have to remove all rough paint and use paint pens to bring it back, same gos for the letters, logos etc etc:

got other projects on the go so steady as this one gos i think, hopefully will get this tip top and back to itself again and hopefully another 30 years to go.

oh and yes the monitor has burn.its a wgv1001 so its pretty rare chassis for uk,now i got 2 of them,1 is in my space zap.midway must have used wg for their machines in the early 80's.
 :)

ebay,like 3 weeks ago.

got the exact same prob yours has,it has the same lines you got,it looks like the reset voltage is way to high,it is like 3.3v when it should be 0.3

i snipped the reset wire from the power supply board,i inserted the end into gnd on the edge connector of the boardset.now i get the thick lines and i can hear the space ship that fly across the top and loud hum,i think its the thump thump sound of the invaders.

unfortunately,1 rom chip had broken leg,i broke 2 other rom chips legs as they was real brittle.luckily i have 4 rom chips at hand,2 on the board also so now i need to get the roms burned.

i got a programmer but,i dont know what adaptor i would need.

so now its sorting the roms out prob.

i got it from .co.uk,its american table though,i have had to buy a step down transformer.bar faulty boards the table is all there, yes theres parts that need replacing, all in good time.just get the cab tidied up and try and get the boards working.someone is already asking £125 for this board set, even in part exchange i know these boards are worth half of that easily, the fact the the garbage screen is shown is proof that the boards are not totaled, same gos for yours.

they say to remove all the rom chips and put them back 1 at a time and try shorting them to see what happens, theres a little more to it but,if you google in the right place theres a wealth of info.so next stop for me is to get the roms all burned again and then try that.

i can concentrate on my other projects and clean this table top up and i think its boards need a bit of cleaning also.

thought i would give you update.

whats happened.ok,i found reset prob at the psu,it was far too high, ordered a cap kit for it and should help recify it (hopefully)

cosmetics,i have been sorting the bottom legs/edges as they were broken or none existant,so i had to fill and build with p38 car body filler and sand this is where i got:

all the bottom is now ready for black satin paint, same gos for the corners and the top lid:

after all the black parts are painted it just needs a good clean of the laminate.i am keeping the original control panels, rather than fit repro cpo i will hang tight till better cp's are available (original) that way i aint blowing money.i bought a pair of nos flipper control sticks for each side (from usa, waiting for delivery) so they should look good and make the cp look better than is now, should help the game play better once i get round to sorting roms out and checking the ram chips, replacing bad rams if i find any.

all the metal part are off at the powder coater, will hopefully have them on friday, then will refit them.

i got the coin door shot blast and am currently spraying it satin black (well i was until i ran out of spray paint)

just thought i would update with where i am now rather than not take pics and lose the moment forever.

i have painted the corners, the top and i have had the metal parts shot blasted and powder coated.i have applied tmolding to 3 of the control panel edges as i ran out so i could not finish the last one:

i only had the coin door and frame shotblasted,i primed and sprayed it satin black.i had some of the coin entry parts powder coated silver (as i had 5 of them) so the door has a nice shiny coin entry also.

left to do now is,1 cp side needs tmolding, the lid needs 1" tmolding round it also, its on order.i have 2 nos paddle controls on their way, just waiting for them,so i can replace the old and refit the control panels.

i have to cap the ps board to sort the reset line power problem,i have to get 4 leg levellers and i have the boards to sort out,i am sorting out a test rom and a single rom for the single rom mod,if there are any bad rams when i test them i will have to replace them.

then all that is left is the top glass.

just a small update for you.

well i got a capkit from bobroberts for the power supply and it did not correct the high reset voltage,i replaced the -5v regulator and the same, the reset voltage floats around 2.5v.

i bought a used deluxe motherboard from usa,was told it was not working, from the pic in the auction it had the cpu missing, was unsure what else.anyways, gets it today and i fit the old cpu from the other boardset i already had,it was missing the crystal so i removed that off the old one and put it on the one i got from usa and it fires up but,i get the attract screen its just it runs mighty fast and the bases at the bottom seem to be a bit broken up but, dont know if that due to the speed of the attract screen and the bases being blown up by the invaders.

i am currently gnd'g the reset line which i aint 100% happy with.

heres a pic:

probably bad ram!
