Anyone have NEC-XM29 modelines they want to share??
« on: June 28, 2010, 03:21:03 pm »
topic is self explanatory.

I'm hoping to leech some good modelines from the monitor guru's who have a XM-29 in their cab.

I secured a great deal on a NEC XM-29 via craigslist and have it decased and in my cab.
Soft15khz is wonderful and all....but I've spent waaaayyyyy too much time trying to figure out custom modelines for my games and being dissapointed in the outcome.

I am embarrassed and will not disclose   the amount of time I've spent using the LRMC website, and XFree86 Modeline website, Powerstrip, and toiling with advcfg/advv to only have struck out.  I assume my failures are due to me not having a complete grasp of what to do & expect for results.  XFree86 site wants certain timings from the monitor, but I doubt that I am using the right ones....if anyone has this info, I would appreciate some help.

I have games running resolutions smiliar to pacman at 384X288 & Donkey Kong to 352X256...these look nice.  Many of the horizontal games have resolutons very similar to the native res,so these make good choices as well providing the refresh rate is similar.

Mortal Kombat series is one that sticks out in my mind....mainly due to the refresh rate disparity.  There are others, but the biggest concern comes from the games with wierd refresh rates.  **EDITED**For the MK series, I can select 400X256, but the refresh options are only: auto, 60hz, 61hz, or 70hz...is mame automatically selecting 54hz on auto?  When it plays, it has a small hitch in the part of the opening sequence when the pictures of the combatants scroll down the screen.  So naturally, I think I'm having a refresh problem....or am I?

If anyone has some nice modelines that they wouldn't mind to share...a forty-something yr old kid would be grateful...

I wish I could help you man, but modelines are kind of specific to each monitor.

I suppose there is a standard front and back porch that goes with the resolutions, or at least one that can serve as "default".  I guess that's what the ones included with soft 15khz do.

Have you been able to set the exact modelines you want in advancemame?  If you can get it running in there, then it's a piece of cake to copy the modelines over to Soft 15khz and use them in any emulator you want.

I must be doing something wrong....

Running advancemame, DK give a great picture by default.  I check in the video settings and it gives me the following:  400X256X16 8.5/16.1/60.0

Rinning advv.exe -advmamev after running advcfg.exe -advmamec, I create a modeline using those parameters in advancemame.  In advv, the screen test is almost perfect and I save it.  BUT, when I plug this modeline into Soft15Khz, I get a different picture where the image is overscanned by 2 inches or more.  This is where I think my inexperience comes in...?  This is the modeline I plugged into Soft15Khz...bear in mind that it worked perfectly in advv...??:

Modeline "400x256@60.00" 8.45856 400 424 472 528 256 257 258 267 -hsync -vsync

Here's pics to show what is happening:

Hmm, I suppose you can't use monitor H and V controls to get it to fit right?

I have monitor controls on the front of my monitor, and I use them very frequently.  I might have had the same issue and not even known about it because I just automatically corrected it with monitor controls.

Have you tried to compensate for this overscanning by purposefully underscanning in ADVV to compensate for the anticipated overscanning, and then copying the modeline into Soft 15khz and see if it stretches it out to the right size?

If AdvanceMAME works, use it instead. Alternatively, try these for 256 and 288 games, respectively:

modeline '352x256@59,697' 7,47 352 352 405 450 256 257 260 271 -hsync -vsync

modeline '352x264@59,697' 7,47 352 352 405 458 264 265 268 279 -hsync -vsync

modeline '352x288 18,7kHz 60Hz' 8,68 352 368 408 464 288 289 292 312 -hsync -vsync

Thanks for the modelines!!  I got `em plugged in and they work out nice.

I have figured out my issues I was having with the 400X256 getting cropped.  I experimented with my on-board video...it worked, but I lost resolutions under 356(H).  I switched back out to my old ati 9200se and went installed catylist 6.11 instead of 6.5.  SS says to use 6.5 for my card, but all these problems went away when I went to 6.11.  I was able to reporduce the overscan every time I reinstalled cat 6.5.

Now on to a philosophical question.  If I would run DK and pacman at 448x256 & 448x288, are these the closest resolutions I can pull off to being porportionally accurate for my horizontal monitor?  Right now they look skinny, but it may be from me being used to the fatter resolutions....  :-\

Get out the tape measure and see if it's a 3:4 image.

BUT

Don't get too picky.  Monitors have a lot of variance in size, overscan, underscan, geometry issues, screen cutoff, and curvature.

If it's within 10% of 3:4 you're good to go.  Get to playin them games. ;D
