Rygar help required
« on: June 28, 2010, 02:39:05 pm »
Hi,

Would be great if you could help – I’ll start from the beginning….

I brought an old non-working arcade machine from eBay to play around with as I’ve always wanted one. Inside the machine I found a load of PCB’s screwed onto a board – and there was wires everywhere. After a bit of playing around with it I realised that it was a JAMMA conversion and it was just disconnected so I plugged it in and switched on to find Robotron come up on the screen. Result! Also in the machine were 2 other boards connected together but there was nothing written on them. I found out ground and 5 volts from looking at the TTL chips, switched it on and scoped out the RGB and sync lines.  I took Robotron out and connected the boards in, switched it on and had a screen full of random pixels. Forcing the coin and player 1 buttons I could see that the game was doing something so I knew that the board was alive. Still had no idea what the game was though so I took out the EPROMS and downloaded the data. Lots of raw data but I did find what looked like the intro to a game so I copied and pasted it into Google and hey presto – it was Rygar.

So that’s as far as I’ve got. I was wondering if you have any ideas how to get the game working - I would like to repair it as it would be quite interesting to going – I’d have 2 games then. One thing I will mention is that there is an IC missing – it’s a 2016 and it’s connected with the Yamaha sound chip so I’ve ruled this out as the problem. I did manage go get the screen to display “OUND ERROR” – and this matches what I found in some of the data I downloaded – which means “SOUND ERROR”. I was going to replace the IC once the display was working or do you think that this could be causing the problem? There’s also a fairly large capacitor missing from the first board (right by where the connector is) and I think that’s just coupled between 0 and 5 volts so I don’t think that’s causing it either but I could be wrong. I’ve also done the usual checks – cleaned the board etc..

If you want any pictures I can send some. Would be great if you could help me get the board going – I’m sure that it’s probably something fairly simple, the boards look in good shape. I’m quite good with electronics but I need a bit of a hand as it’s all new to me.

Thanks for you time,

mxkid.

Hello, and welcome.

If you don't get an answer here, try KLOV.

Thanks.

I could do with some test pins or something. I can soon scope some waveforms and see whats happening it's just I'm not sure what to look for.

Is the game worth fixing? I don't know if it's a classic or not, looks good so I thought my lad (and me!) would have fun playing it.

Rygar is a fun game. Very difficult. Maybe too difficult. Robotron is definitely a keeper!

I'd love to see photos of the boards.  Robotron is not a JAMMA game and has a specialized harness.  Rygar...not sure if it's JAMMA but I'm pretty sure has an edge connector.

Hi,

Your right - Robotron is a JAMMA conversion. There are wire's everwhere - take a look.

Rygar - not sure of the connector, I had to solder wires to pads to get it to work. But your right, none are JAMMA.

Hope the images show up ok!

Even weirder, that's not a Robotron cabinet. (I was expecting it to be a converted Robotron!)

I only got it for the cabinet really - it had 2 controllers and the screen can rotate through 90 degrees (should make Robotron a bit easier to play!). I was going to get a JAMMA card with loads of games on and just use that. As I got the machine non-working I wasn't bothered about the boards but it would be nice to get it all going.

Are the games fairly common? The whole lot didn't cost much.

:o      ::)

I am so tempted to low-ball you for the Robotron set of boards...

PS: "common" doesn't have the effect on value you would think. Some of the most common games are the most collectible and therefore have retained better value than some rare ones. Supply and demand.

Not sure that I'd sell them yet - I've not had a chance to plug them in and play them. it's good that I've got all of the origional paperwork for the boards though, there's a lot of info if they happen to go faulty.

Robotron sounds like a good game - I actually found a website that has tons of info about it - shame theres not one for Rygar  :D
