Game pictures larger than TV screen
« on: August 03, 2003, 03:54:50 am »
I have noticed a few games such as popey and stadium crosss that when launched, the pictures run off the sides or top/bottom of my TV screen.  This even happens when the Mame 'type OK to continue' screen comes up.  When I run these same games on my computer monitor, they fit the monitor perfect.  I am running all the same software and settings on both machines.  The machine with the computer monitor has an MX440 video card.

On my cab, I am running a Radeon 7000 with S-Video out on a 27" Panasonic TV.  Is there any way to get these games (there are more) to fit properly on my TV screen.  I am currently running DK with Mame71.

Thanks

Sounds to me like you need to setup some ini files for your games.

I have no experience using a TV so take thgis for what its worth but I would try using one of the tools out there designed to setup ini's for use with the ArcadeVGA video card resolutions, If you can figure out what resolutions your video card supports and look OK on your TV I think you just have to edit the TXT file that comes with the tool and it will create ini's using your acceptable resolutions.

One is here (I've never tried it):  http://tomspeirs.com/

This one I have tried and it works good http://gavin.benson.users.btopenworld.com/Downloads/

I had this problem with a few games on my TV.  I use MamePlus, which has a 32 version and a command line version all in the same package.  I run the command line most of the time, but i use the 32 to make some changes.  I used the 32 version to set indiviual games to a set res of 640x480 and it fixed it.  You can also change the mame.ini file (chances are resoution is set to auto right now) or make custom ones.  I would try the quick fix i did before you start manually editing files.

Thanks for the help.  I went into my mame.ini file and changed the resolution from auto to 800x600 which is what my video card is running at.  It seemed to fix the problems!  I don't know what effects this might have on all the other games, but I tried all the ones I normally play and they seemed to work exactly as they did before (when resolution was set to auto).

How does the resolution setting in the mame.ini file work.  Obviously it does not set all my games to 800x600 because even with the resolution set this way, games like galaga and ms-pacman do not take up the full screen.  Just wondering what it actually does.

Thanks.

Well I couldn't tell you how it exactly works, but from what I am to understand, all the native resolutions of the MAME games are lower than 800 x 600 as it is, even 640x480 (it think).  If you are looking for a fuller screen, you can use the GUI (this one I don't know how to do in the mame.ini file) and their is an option for 'Keep Aspect Ratio.'  I turned this off for some games.  I did this to Missile Command to fill my 34" Widescreen.  I don't think you want to do this with all the games though.  Some one else?  Know anything about details on Resolutions?

I'm not looking for a fuller screen.  I was actually looking to shrink down some of the games that were falling of the sides / top and bottom of the screen.   I do have keep aspect ratio enabled, and that's probably why games like galaga and ms-pacman still show up like they are suppose too (not full screen).  This was exactly what I wanted.  So far it is working great.  I guess the 800x600 setting I specified may be a maximum resolution allowed?  Don't know.  But it works.
