Arcade Monitor as a tv????

I'm just woundering how a TV looks on a arcade monitor

I can get a 50" Arcade monitor that was used for daytona and has no burnin

and i saw these adapters on a site and i was woundering if its a stupid idea to use this 50" monitor to watch DVD and tv on?

its only $300 for the monitor and all so i'm just woundering

Most 50" 'monitors' are just rear projection TVs. They usually don't have a tuner, only Composite or S-Video inputs. Hook it up to a tuner (a VCR would work), and you can watch TV all you want.

For monitors that take RGB (Usually 32" and smaller), you can buy a NTSC to RGB decoder that converters Composite or S-Video to RGB. In the end, they both look pretty much the same as a TV that size does, though you can get a better quality picture out of them, since arcade monitors typically have more adjustments.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most monitors CGA? This should be equivalent to the input from RCA to coax cable.  While most TV's today take S-Video in or better.. so I would assume most TV's today are medium resolution or better (when compared to monitors from arcade machines).

If you watch cable, you won't notice a difference.  If you watch digital cable or satellite TV, I think you'll notice a big difference in sharpness.  Plus, it's a pain to make a nice cabinet for a monitor to be used as a TV.

Normal TV's are the same res as arcade monitors - therefore us lucky Europeans can use Scart TV's as arcade monitors...

My arcade monitor came today, and the picture is great - the same as with my Scart TV, but as Tom61 says I have more control over adjustments

Oh, when I say 'arcade monitor' I mean 15khz or standard res...

This is exactly what I am trying to do.

I can get one for under $300 also and I tried one out with my Laptop (with TV out and also with a VGA -> RGB cable). It didn't work and I was told the reason why is because this rear projection monitor is locked at 24KHz. Unlike normal Rear projection TV's etc which are 15kHz. I would love to find out how to get one to work. Computers run at 31Khz but the TV out on graphics cards convert this down to 15Khz for TV's. Any cards that can convert to 24 aswell?

Here's hoping someone has done it as they are awesome looking screens.

Well you could use your VGA to RGB cable and use software to set the video out at 24Khz

The same way how people use the pc on the arcade monitors without buying that special card.

But there is specific hardware that lets you set the khz of TV signals but i dont know how much that would cost tho.

Get the software that lets you set the khz of the video but cause your using a laptop this might actually hurt the LCD so be carefull u should use a pc and get a cheap TV in card.

Hee hee. I want to know how a 50" Daytona monitor doesn't have any burn in. The game must have blew up the third day it was on location or something. Most every 50" Daytona I have ever seen has layers of burn in. (Most every 50" monitor period really).

btw... Why not hack it to a computer.

And get a TV in card?  

With good software and a decent computer, you get free TiVo!  DVD!  Mame!  all in one cabinet!

I tried it before with my cabinet, but for some reason I cant get my ATI TV wonder to work properly with ArcadeVGA.  Maybe I using the wrong TV card driver but I'm gonna try again.  
DVD playback also is a problem with ArcadeVGA.  For some reason the picture is cut and bigger than the monitor.

This is exactly what I am trying to do.

But this monitor is 3 hours drive away so when we went up I only took my laptop but couldn't get it to work cause my TV out was 15Khz and the VGA is 31Khz I believe.

What I am asking is if anyone has changed the output of the VGA port to 24Khz (from 31) or the output of a Video Out/TV card to 24Khz (from 15). Would this just be software? If so what software can do this?

Ok here is the software to make TV cards output a certin khz you set.

Called power strip it will let you change settings of the video card and set the output.

I don't know if it would work on a laptop but it will work with almost any normal video card (not sure it will set the lhz to the tv out but it will for the VGA out.)

Oh the reason it didnt have anyburnin is cause when it was first being played the guy who was playing the first game got pissed off (he sucked sooo bad a kid could do better) he broke the controls and they just left it in the backroom they forgot to get it repaired (so i'm told but it does have no burnin)

Stuff like that does happen from time to time. My King & Balloon mini came with a broken joystick and 700 plays on the coin meter. Except for some drag damage in back (from being moved around), it looked like it was fresh from the crate. Obviously the place got the game, the joystick broke after a week or two, it went to the back, and then never came out again.

So now that you know this Daytona monitor will kick butt as a TV/DVD screen I assume you will be testing it with your computer and powerstrip and buying it?

I hope so because I would have to drive 3+ hours to give it a go and if it doesn't work I wouldn't even be able to tell if it has any burn in so trip for nothing.

I have no money and i would never be able to get the monitor my dad's not happy about the new arcade cab i got i was just thinking 50" is BIG and thats very cheap in australia they want the same price for a 15" tv  

But you can load the software up on the laptop and see if it does set the rate then you can plug in a monitor and see if it shows up.

Most monitors are multi sync and u should be able to see what the khz of it is in the menu's of your monitor if it supports that feature.

I have been playing around Medium Resolution Monitors lately since I got my Blitz Cab.  You can use a Trident Blade 3D card fine with Windows or you can Get a Quantum 3D AARDVARK Card that acutally has a port for 24 9 (EGA).  I think the Omnicade has a setup for EGA Monitors with Powerstrip.  I say go for it!
