Thom's First Build
« on: June 07, 2010, 09:12:09 pm »
A few of you might remember me from a post about my Asteroids machine a while back - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=102273.0

I've gotten a good start on my first home-built arcade cabinet now. Here's a link to a page showing my progress:
http://www.thewhistleshop.com/misc/thoms/thoms_arcade.html

Thanks again to everyone for all the helpful info here!

Very nice Thom! Looks like your getting along quite well. A question, why did you choose suzu products?

Thanks IG-88.

I've ordered parts from a number of different vendors so far. I'm really not up yet on who's best for what, etc. (as you know, there's a mind-numbing amount of info out there to wade through). I know that the parts that I ordered will fit in the pre-cut holes in my control panel. That - and price - were really deciding factors...

If there's a specific reason why you're asking about that, I'd sure be interested...

By the way when I saw that first pic of your dog the first thing that came to mind was Frisbee Dog! :)

You're not laminating the insides too are you? I assume not. Hows that material take paint? It looks a little porous in some of your pics.

I had thought about laminating the inside - just at the edges, where it would show - but I decided that I had enough to worry about on the build. If I do another cabinet in the future, I will seriously consider laminating all parts that show.

This material takes paint very well - one liberal coat seems to be covering it fine. Any problems that you see in the pics are probably due to my lack of photography skills, not the coverage of the paint...

I've been thinking about your question - if I plan the rest of the laminating carefully, I might have enough laminate left to do the insides of the upper part of the cabinet. It'd make sense to do this, since the upper part will be at eye level. I'll try to get everything laid out in the day or two and see what happens...

That's exactly what I did. I looks REALLY slick.

Update of my work on the cabinet today:
http://www.thewhistleshop.com/misc/thoms/thoms_arcade.html#UPDATE-06152010

I'm thinking of "Thom's Roms" for the marquee - opinions???

I should be able to order my marquee, bezel and side art tomorrow. After that, I think I'm pretty close to having everything here that I need to get it up and running...

Something told me that someone would say that, but I didn't know why. Why shouldn't I use that?

My second choice was "Arcade Madness". I think I'll go with that...

Thom's Read Only Memories? Who'd get in an uproar about that?  :dizzy:

Anyway, good luck on the rest of your build, lookin' great so far.

I think it's a case of just being careful of using the 'R' word in any context on the forum.

Thom's ROMs suggests an arcade machine running MAME that is full of ROMs of arcade machines for which I presume Thom doesn't own an original machine or PCB therefore blatantly stepping into what Saint describes in his book (page 346) 'The black area'.
