What do we know about partsexpress vinyl?
« on: June 04, 2010, 12:56:01 pm »
HI guys. Has anyone used any of the vinyls from partsexpress.com? It would cost me 20$ to do a cab from them opposed to $90 for kings oak from arcadeshop.

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=261-614

Thanks guys.

Everyone raves about it.  It's always recommended by those who have used it.

Nice, I was worried it might not stick very well. I'm trying to keep my budget low without having a crappy looking cab in the end.

I got mine through Amazon (still from Parts Express) for pretty cheap.  It's thin, but sticks HARD.  As in, forget repositioning anything if you get a corner wrong!

I've used it on a control panel and I would recommend it. It is very durable and sticks extremely well.

It works great on CPs but I wouldn't use it to cover a side panel or anything.  Make sure to use some 3M spray glue when you apply it so it sticks in place forever.

Haven't used their vinyl, but I've been ordering stuff from them for years. I use their speaker box carpet a lot for car audio projects. good prices, good quality, and usually fast shipping

I like others, ordered my Parts Express vinyl through Amazon to save a few  bucks.
Its fairly easy to apply but you only get one shot  (least on mdf) . Trims like butter with a new blade.
Going on a year on my cab and no lifting or separation  problems.

Managed to cover it only using one roll of vinyl too

This may be a stupid question but they rolls are only 2ft wide, how do you cover the side of a cab without a joint between sheets down the middle ?

Edit: I think I see the joint now!

Is there anywhere you can get the same stuff which is wider than 2ft ?

Same question.

I would also like to know if there are any Europeans here who were able to get their hands on a roll of that stuff... Getting some to Belgium would cost roughly 6-7 times the amount of the price of 1 roll... There's supposed to be a German reseller, but they don't respond to email.

You can always get full-width from a Happ reseller -- the stuff is awesome, but it ain't cheap.

I recently came across a supplier based in the UK. Have a look in the thread below for details.

Definitely good stuff - I use it on all my removable control panels. Going on 2 1/2 years and the original panels are still holding up great!

Can someone link me to parts express vinyl? I can't find it on Amazon. I need it at least 24" wide.

That's thick, cloth backed material vinyl like you'd find at a fabric store.

They are talking about this peel n stick stuff:

People believe me 'cuz I has stars...

I would think the thicker stuff would be less prone to tearing, etc.  I haven't used any of that type of stuff.

I did once use black marble contact paper on a control panel I made!  :dizzy:

I think the thicker stuff would be more prone to tearing because it is fabric backed and would be much softer...almost like having a pillow effect to it.  Objects would catch on it.  Just my completely uninformed opinion.

If you go fabric, you have to go all the way.  Make your cabinet huggable.

The PE vinyl used to be fantastic.  It was stiff (would hide surface imperfections), heavy duty, had a surface that was almost impossible to dig into and the adhesive was crazy, even on bare MDF.  You had one chance to put it down right.

However, a few years back, they suddenly started shipping a different product. It was softer, you can see imperfections through it, and the adhesive, while not terrible, is nothing to write home about.  It wouldn't be my first choice for a quality job, but it's definitely better than contact paper.  I really wish the original product was still available.  :(

For those wanting vinyl over 24 inches wide, I would suggest looking at This Old Game.

http://www.thisoldgame.com/categories/vinyl

Their vinyl looks great and sticks well but there is a catch....it shows surface imperfections.  With this in mind, surface preparation is critical....if you invest the time, this stuff will look great.

While we are on the subject, if anyone can recommend a nice rigid vinyl to hide minor surface imperfections I would appreciate it.  It doesn't need to be very wide.

I use it all the time. Covered some cabinet sides with the black ash variety on the weekend. Looks very professional.

I recommend running an iron over it to really bond the adhesive. Wrap the iron in an old pillowcase or t-shirt. ;)
