Squiggles on a Sega Monitor
« on: August 01, 2003, 10:27:34 am »
 ???I picked up this monitor and it was in a Hydra cabinet.  It says it is a Sega Monitor but I dont remember the model number off hand.  I finally got my controller and ArcadeVGA card and computer all setup but I am noticing that I keep getting these rolling bends on the monitor.  This happens in windows and dos.  I am using advmenu and dmame.

I have included picutres in hopes that someone can give me some pointers.  Thanks!!!

Try adjusting the knobs on the back of the monitor, not exactly sure what the problem is, but I'm guessing it can be adjusted out.  Just get a mirror or something to see what the monitor is doing while you adjust it (monitors have to be adjusted 'live').

Also, have you let this monitor warm up? It takes several minutes for older monitors to warm up completely.

The knobs dont seem to help.  I have let it warm up for a couple of hours and if anything they seem to get worse.  Is it possible that I might be getting interference from something in the cabinet or that I have a bad ground?

I am bringing up this question again since I seem to be unable to figure this out.

If anyone needs more information I can get the model numbers off the monior.

I have checked the ground and everything is kosher there.  There are times when it is worse than others.  Last night I changed my Windows resolution from 800x600 to 640x480 (J-pac and ArcadeVGA) which made the squiggles a little larger but also let the monitor run for about 4 hours.  I have tried adjusting everything on the monitor execpt the Horizontal size since the knob doenst look normal (to me anyways).  I will have to upload some pictures of the board.

Anyway... Please Help!!! :o

::edit::
oh I have changed my frontend to MameWAH running Windows 98 SE and 32-bit Mame.

My initial thought is "cap kit", as that is the general semi-cure-all for a LOT of old monitor issues.  Plus it's good maintenance =)

*shrug* I don't know enough to say if this particular sympton is effected by cap kit... but odds are...

I will lookup the model so I can get a "cap kit".  I'm sure it can't hurt it but I really (really) hope it fixes it!  ;D

I've been repairing coin-op video game monitors since 1976. If your monitor has not had a capacitor kit installed recently (or at all) then it should be the first thing to do. In my professional opinion judging by your pictures, you have capacitor problems in that monitor.
