Emulators on a Mac=specs
« on: May 24, 2010, 11:27:02 pm »
Hello
I may be able to get ahold of some older macs and I am wondering what type of mac I would need to run say MK full speed? I noticed there are several emulators available on mac but all the specs usually on say what OS to run ie) Mac OS x or 10.3... unlike a pc it does not say 1ghz chip with 256 ram?

anyone help?

Is there a front end for mac?

thanks
Jim

if they are the intel based macs then in my opinion the only good option is to put windows on it.

Most consoles have decent emu's, MAME is fully on par since SDL mame is available, BUT, it's an Intel game now. MK will NOT run good on G4/G5's. Maybe as N64 game, but not as arcade version.
So SDLMame, Richard Banister and Emulaunch (FE) are the words to google.

i have a Mac G5 running MacMame, and the results are not that great tbh.
I have MK1, 2 & 3 on there and they run rubbish!! MK1 just about playable the other 2 no way!

I sourced a cheap old dell tower and installed the mame em on there and all he MK titles and they all run as they should (100% like the arcade versions!)

Mac's are great for most thing but when it comes to mame, your going to have lots of issues.

At the moment I do not have one for emulation just for home use, however I was looking at a G3 or 4.. the g3 was I think 700 mhz

I do a lot of emulation with old Macs. OS X places too much burden on the CPU for many mame games. You can get much faster speeds running OS 9 (if possible) on the same box. Old games run great on a G3 333 and up a bit better on a G4 but not as much as you would expect. When you move to OS X, everything starts to "dog" for me. CPU intensive games need a PC IMO.
I run Macs as "dedicated mames" playing 1 game only. PC's are king for playing all kinds of different games and front ends.
