WG4906 Vertical Collapse Issue
« on: May 19, 2010, 09:39:54 pm »
Hey guys, I got a Ms. Pacman cocktail with a monitor issue. The monitor is a WG4906 19". Here's the story.

The monitor was working until my dad busted the neck on the RCA monitor tube. I had a spare G07 from my Ms. Pacman upright so I swapped the tube. Being the novice that I am, I didn't switch yokes which I know now is a no no. When I tried plugging in the yoke from the G07 on the WG chassis, the lights on the cocktail dimmed and it eventually blew a fuse. I replaced the fuse and did some research. I eventually put the original yoke on the new tube and didn't have power issues. I now have the monitor displaying a thin line across the screen, which I now know is considered "vertical collapse".

I have just capped the board with a cap kit from twistedquarter.com (dunno everyone's opinion on their cap kits) but the cap kit didn't fix the problem. The line in the middle does display what it should though. It is the proper colors. You see the ghosts bouncing around toward the middle and slivers of the maze from top to bottom. The line is a pixel or two wide.

I'm at a dead end and could use any help and expertise. I've cruised just about every thread that is close and I don't have a multimeter

you'll have to replace the horizontal output transistor or "HOT".... it's the big one bolted to the heatsink.

and go buy a multimeter...they are like 10 bucks now a days... save yourself a huge hassle.  :whap

if you had a multimeter you could tel your HOT was toast...and you could check your yoke to make sure it's not fried.

run to the store.........nnnnnnnnnnnnnnow!

we will wait.

The problem is vertical collapse not horizontal though. Vertical for Pacman is horizontal in monitor lingo. Catch my drift?

Which of these two is it?

Check over your whole vertical circuit.  And your yoke connection.  And your yoke!

It's vertical collapse. What do I need to check on my yoke and yoke connection? The connectors are firmly connected.

well, I hear often times with a vertically and other unusually mounted monitors, such as in Ms Pac, that the line is horizontal, so they believe they have a vertical problem, which is incorrect since the line spans the shortest axis, it is a horizontal problem and vice versa...makes things a little complicated to diagnose... which is why a picture is worth 1000 words.

I understand on the pictures. Just can't get one right now. I also understand that some people are idiots and don't know vert. from horz. but I assure you guys it's a vertical collapse because the line runs the length of the screen.

@Sir Peale - Could my yoke adjustment/position be causing this problem?

The position wouldn't cause collapse - if anything the colours would just be horribly off, but you'd have a picture.

This could happen if one of the yoke windings broke.  Or your vertical IC/transistors are blown.  Or a bad cap.  Or a pulled trace.  There's lots of reasons.

Ok. I need to check the Vertical IC/transistors next then. I just did the cap kit but it could be one of the other types of caps on the board. Am I able to check the components with the multimeter while the board is out and unplugged?
