Any recommendations among these three?
« on: May 18, 2010, 09:27:17 pm »
Hi everyone. Am in the process of putting together a mame cab. While I know the cons for using an lcd, I am going to use one for ease and price. I have it narrowed down to these three and would like to know if anyone has any input/preferences, etc. on them?

1. Hanns·G HZ251HPB Black 25" (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254048&cm_re=hanns_g_monitor-_-24-254-048-_-Product)
2. ASUS VW266H Black 25.5" (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236047)
3. Hannspree HF257HPB 25" (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5943&CatId=3774)

All are 25", 2ms response time (though from people on the board it seems this isn't that important), and within the same price range. I'd like to purchase one in the next couple days, so any thoughts would be appreciated.

in A.D. 2010...
An Aspect war was beginning...

WHAT HAPPEN?!
Somebody set up us the bomb!
We get signal...
WHAT?!
Main screen stretched......
IT'S YOU!!!
How are you gentlemen?
All your monitors are belong to us!....
you are on your way to destruction
WHAT YOU SAY?!?!
You have no 4:3 ratio monitors in your list...make your time!
HA HA HA HA.....
CAPTAIN!...
Take off every 16:9!
You know what you doing?
Move video...
For great justice.

ahem......

well, everything depends on what you care most about...be aware that your image will be stretched to fill the 19:9 ratio. otherwise stick to square 4:3 (really 5:4 but shhhh!!!) monitors

playing one player games?...any of these monitors will do.

two players? you might have an issue with some screens going funky colors on you when viewing off center.

going vertical?... same as before you may have a wierd 3d effect where the image looks fine in one eye but the colors are distorted in your other eye.

i would go out to an actual STORE and view them personally in the configuration you are planing to use it in...that would be best.

I know, I know, 4:3 is better, but I haven't heard of anyone who's found an 25" lcd in 4:3 (I think the largest that's made is 21"). And since it'll be playing both horizontal & vertical games, I'd like to get the biggest size my cab will fit.  It won't be mounted vertically, so I'm not worried about that.

It will be a 2p control panel and the viewing angle was one of the things I was worried about. I thought maybe if someone had used one of these they could tell me how it plays. That's a good idea about checking it out in person first...just a pain cause they're all in different stores.

Most of the major arcad monitor manufatuers are making 4:3 lcds (wells gardner for one.)
Mind you they are a litle pricey

Yea, the 26" wells gardner lcd is around $530, which is more than double the price of these computer monitors. I might just go with the asus, though a few on this site have been fans of the hanns g 28", so maybe the 25" will be good too.

$530 for a 26" 4:3 LCD is a steal if it has a PVA/MVA or IPS panel.  Little known fact: good LCDs are still rather expensive.  The LCDs I wanted for my PC are in the neighborhood of $1000 each.  I settled on some old 24" CRTs that blow the specs on even the LCD out of the water and only cost me $85 a piece, but of course they weigh like 100lb each :)

IPS and PVA/MVA panels are the ones with good viewing angles (S-IPS being king with H-IPS not far behind and having better response times).  PVA/MVA look nice, but they tend to exhibit input latency due to overdrive calcs which is not good for arcade gaming applications.
