software rotation...
« on: July 31, 2003, 02:08:32 pm »
hey, i just finished my cocktail cab (FINALLY). it has a third cp like the one jakl14 mentioned in his post...

http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=10250

is there a way that mame can play horizontal games on the moniter horizontally, and when a vertical game comes, rotate? i kow it can do that, but when a 2p vertical game (Galaga, Ms. Pac-Man, etc) is playing can it rotate again to face the opposite end? i would put this in moniter, but it seems i am working with the softwware and not hardwware. thanks in advance

Jacob

I've never used it, but I'm pretty sure there is an option in MAME for it. I think it's just called cocktail mode or something like that. I don't recall...

well, cocktail mode will flip 180 degrees. but i want to be able to have mame set horizontally. for a vertical game, i want to rotate 90 degrees. then cocktail mode will be used.

also, can i set mame to automatically 90 degrees rotate on all vertical games?

What I'm saying is those should all be options in MAME. Here... Let me check the documentation... BRB...

Ok here is how you do it. There may be other ways.

Set a switch in your mame command line to turn off autoration:

-norotate

Or you can edit your mame.ini to do that same. This will turn the screen 90 degrees for vertical games.

Then to have it flip properly for 2p cocktail games you open up the game and turn on cocktail mode inside the game as an option since it was one of the original game settings. You can reach these by hitting "tab" after you've started the game.

There may be a better way to enable the flipping for all games at once, but Imnot aware of it.

-norotate

Bad Alan Bad!  Keep up with the new options in mame :)  You want autoror or autorol.  norotate you won't know which side of the screen the bottom of the picture will be.

norotate doesn't rotate a vertical game to horizontal.  But it doesn't mean the the bottom of the screen will end up on the same side of the monitor.  Autoror/rol takes what the game would have been displayed horizontally and rotates it either to the left or to the right.  That way you know that the bottom of the screen will always be on a certain side of the monitor.

Don't blame me. Blame the poor documentation in windows.txt  :P

There are no descriptions of the individual command for rotation and I've never personally used them. That one sounded right. I figured someone would correct me if I were wrong... At least I was on the right track... (maybe? sort of?)

There's a project for you, keep an updated readme/info:)

BTW, autoror/rol started in like .68 (+/- 1 version)

Well I'd like to finish my machine before I start any other projects. It's not even playable right now. It's got no controls (except that steering wheel) and no PC inside.

Ok, I take it back. My top-fire joystick just came in the mail today. So now I have ONE control...

(This machine is almost good to go, too. Just need to drop it in.)

A little OT,
SirP,
I saw you poking around on some message boards inquiring about Cocktail mode and dipswitchs, Any luck finding a patch to automatically set all dipswitches or something like "CocktailMame?"

I would use .ini files to control the rotation in mame. That way, you will be sure which way it rotates.  I've heard that the autorotate commands (don't know syntax) sometime rotate one way, sometimes another.

make a vertical.ini file in your ctrlr folder and add the rotate right or rotate left command (which ever way goes to your player 1 controls). Then adjust the dip switches for cocktail mode (even though not all support it)

good luck,

Rocky

You might be confisung with the -norotate option

The autoror and autorol seem to work just fine.

PMF, not yet.
