time for gardens again
« on: May 02, 2010, 08:42:15 am »
I had hoped for a much larger garden this year.
My two brothers plowed there fields, then I started mine. Tractor broke!
Big time broke. PTO shaft broke. Means tracktor need to be split in half and rebuilt. :censored:

I plan on Jeff and I doing the work our self's.
A friend of mine came over and plowed my old garden for me. I did not ask him to plow the new garden plot, new plot takes some time to do, old one is fast to till.

I did save a large amount of space this year. My younger brothers garden did not do so well last year. He mentioned he was only going to grow corn. :applaud:

I ran to my house (50 yards at best) grabbed 2 large packs of silver queen corn seeds and tossed them to him. DEAL you grow the corn I will grow everthing else.

I have been working on my seeds for a month now. I have over 320 seedlings started.
Veggies and Fruit.
Blue Berry bush (had 2 last year , Lawn mower accident ) OOPS  :banghead:
4 strawberry plants
1 grape vine
honey dew plants
Congo water melons
sugar baby water melon ( there the best tasting, round and pure green skin)
desert melon ( never tried these , yellow melon , skin peels like a apple?)
cantaloupe
spinach
cabbage
yellow peppers
beef steak tomato
Brussels sprouts
summer squash
cucumber (Boston pickling)
cucumber straight eight
yellow squash
cauliflower
bell pepper
cat nip  :dunno might as well get my cats a buzz.
peas
gold rush beans. I grew these last year, yellow string bean.
bush blue lake green bean
Kentucky wonder green bean

Flowers
zinnia
aster
bachelor button
calendula
marigold

Are you thinking of planting Triffids? Why put the "garden" in a pen?

Ah well, people have a fence round their whole garden overhere. Besides, we have no trouble with cats, dogs, or wild animals either.

I've grown vegetables and seen other people do it, but I never saw people keep their vegetable patch inside a pen.

In what universe is that itsy bitsy fence going to keep out any animals though? Come to think of it, it's probably not going to hold a Triffid inside either  :P

Isn't it more to keep the kids out or to keep balls from rolling through? Or maybe just because it looks kinda cute to have a little fence around it.

My mom had a 30mx30m vegetable garden (100'x100' for the metrically challenged) I hated that thing. My brother and I grew some things there too, but I only liked the tomatoes and radishes.

out here. I live in deep country. dogs run free. cats run free.
not a uncommon sight to see a stray cow in your yard.
the fence tells the animals stay out.
most animals figure out the meaning of fences.

honest it is really for pest controll and curb appeal
I meant no disrespect to you.
gardening and hunting is more of hobby to me than arcades.
I like to share it all with you guys

 :lol

:laugh2: And I thought we were the only ones that had that sort of thing.

Our garden is going to be the death of me this year, just about to get it turned up and rowed ready for planting. Strated with a large patch of nothingness. It's approximately 40' x 80' or so. (hadn't really measured)
Couldn't tell ya what all's in it, I'm just the manual laborer..... Mom and Fiance' are picking the crops.

Raccoons are climbers. Won't keep them out.
Cats are jumpers/climbers. Won't keep them out.
Deer can jump fences, but I don't know if they would...
It will definitely keep the cows out.  ;)
NO MORE!!

we just put one up for our new hogs we got 3 yorkshire's and the wife felt bad when they toached it becuase it drpped them right to their stomach's and they were scared to stand back up so we had to unplug it and get them from under it.

once they were out and the juice back on they dont go by it anymore so they learned real fast there only baby's though so they were confused what to do when they got it but it was kinda sad to see the little guy get zapped and hit the dirt like that but soon as they did it I knew I did everyting right for the electric fence since the wife would not test it first  :dunno

I started mine about 2 weeks ago.. so far only the green beans, radishes and corn are coming up. I may have to re-seed if there's no progress in another week in some of the rows...
