NeoGeo and MAME
« on: May 01, 2010, 11:35:45 pm »
Okay, I have four different sets of Neo Geo Roms.  One made for Nebula, one made for NeoRageX, one I dont know what it works with, and one with WinKawaks...  I can't get almost any of these games to work with any MAME Release, I have tried several from .100 to current and Metal Slug wont work, along with most from the sets...

Am I doing something wrong?  Come on guys, there has to be a simple solution for this.

Obviously you can't link me to pirated sets, I understand that...  You could PM me if you know a trick to get this to work.

Please help me.

make sure you have the bios file for mame (neogeo.zip).

Also as a rule, winkawaks nebula and neorageX  do NOT use the same roms as mame.  Sure they start out the same, but mame gets updated regularly and these emus do not so they end up requiring excessively old sets.  Also mame decrypts the roms properly at runtime and some of these emus don't and/or require cheap hacks to get the games running.

Long story short you need the MAME rom sets for neogeo games and if you want to run those other emulators then you use their specific sets.  They aren't necessarily compatable.

Your computer is probably a bit underpowered for MAME 0117. You could try setting the video mode to directdraw rather than direct3d - this can improve performance if your video card is the weak spot. Failing that, try dropping back to MAME 099 - this was one of the last fast versions of MAME and I used it for awhile when I had a slowish PC. If that's still too slow, you'll need to drop back even more. Bear in mind that when you drop back, many roms and bioses will stop working as these undergo revisions as MAME progresses.

My advice is to find a MAME build that runs fast on your system, then download a complete MAME romset, plus a rollback set. Then you can use CLRMAMEPRO to build a set for your version of MAME.

Good luck. :)
