Tab key not working on compiled mame

Its anyone having problems? i have been compiling mame builds for some time, never had problems, but now since mame 136 mame compiles just fine, but if i try to use the tab key, i get an error and the game closes, im i doing somenthing wrong? thanks for any help

Does an officially compiled [downloaded] Mame binary work?

Try moving/renaming/deleting the default.cfg file usually found in the \cfg folder under where you installed Mame.
I am not sure if it is related to your problem but that file is the one that can redefine the interface keys including Tab. Just guessing.

a regular mame build works ok, its the compiled mame that gives me the error....

Is it an optimized build? Mamedev recommend people don't compile with optimization.

Try the "1" button.  After I compiled that's what worked for me.

and i notice the pause buton exits the app too, wierd.... and no its not an optimized build.
