Now repairing - do not power off error on Wii today
« on: April 01, 2010, 03:06:59 pm »
Uh oh.      ???   ???

I got home today and powered the Wii up to play Lego Indiana Jones with my kid.  Upon turning it on, it produced a solid black screen and said "Now repairing....DO NOT POWER OFF."

Does anybody know what the heck I do now? I can think of only one thing that happened, that somehow or another the NAND became corrupt....or that perhaps it tried a menu update that failed.

In either case, here's my worry - Bootmii is on the machine but not as boot 2; it's stored as the other thing (whose file name I forget).   I do have preloader installed and have been more than able to get to it to copy and check the nand files with this current setup, and I do have a copy of the most recent NAND  on my CPU so I'm not TOO worried about it being dead.

My concern is that I don't know how long I should wait for it to come up with a different message. In talking to my wife - and what I could get out of my daughter (she's only 7, so I wasn't accusing her of anything, just asking if it did anything wierd), neither one of them can recall anything strange happening with a game or the unit when they played with it a day or so ago.  Given that it's been in this state anywhere from 10 minutes to 24 hours ago.

Has anybody seen this error before? How long should I wait before powering it down and seeing if I can fix it with preloader and bootmii?  I did unplug the hard drive to make sure the message was coming from the Wii itself, but it suddenly dawned on me that could be the only situation, potentially, unless a game file on the drive went belly up.

What do you suggest?

Frigo,

You know what ticks me off the most? For some reason after I posted this thread, I thought to myself "What is today?"  Then it HIT ME - it's April Fool's!  I thought to myself "Naw, Nintendo would NEVER pull a stunt like that."

Well, as you stated, it's not the big N but the guys with Preloader....and suffice it to say they got me good. Thank you for letting me in on how to "break" the joke.  Like I said, not too many worries here, because of the support I have on our modified Wii...and once I thought about it possibly being a prank, all my worries went far away.

Thank you though - and I humbly bow in shame to ones far better at it than me.  :applaud:  :applaud:

That is freaking hilarious!

I find it funny how nobody bothered to press A.

It is funny until you read about some people bricking their machine at gbatemp because they thought they knew of something in the NAND they should remove.

I think the Preloader staff ought to pay for anybody's Wii that was inadvertently bricked because of their "joke." When you're talking about destroying a piece of property worth $200, that's a lot to ask people to just "laugh off."

It's still funny that they freaked out, as it even said "do not power off" yet they obviously did break the process by resetting or whatever.  A simple press of a button would have done it.

It's also funny how they thought they could fix it themselves.  You, however, were intelligent enough to pull up the ol' internet and check it out a little more thoroughly before haphazardly deleting stuff.  So we're glad you did that!

Also, all homebrew and custom firmware, IOS, etc have disclaimers on them when you download/install them that they are "at your own risk".

Not to mention it isn't exactly legal in the first place, so good luck to them on recouping costs!  :D

True enough about the warnings and legality issues. Once again, I hadn't forgotten it, just didn't think it through before speaking.

In so far as to me being smart enough to check it out, that was just a lucky thing sure enough - normally my brain isn't that sharp (lack of sleep and stress), but I remembered what I heard back in the early days of this group - research before you post, someone else may already have answered your question....and I got lucky, I suppose. Still took Frigo to confirm what I believed though!

And if just pressing A wasn't bad enough...ironically it was still up on mine as of 3:30 PM today and for reasons I can't explain, the Wii did not fully turn on when I pressed power on the Wiimote...and so it was on a "yellow" light. Well, when I turned it completely off by hand (red light) and rebooted (green) the message was gone and we were back to a normal welcome screen.  My suspicion is that it probably would have done the same thing yesterday had I not been scared to death!
