Vertical Mario Bros.?
« on: March 21, 2010, 02:04:22 am »
I know there's a vertical orientation version of this being used on some of the recent 3 in 1 arcade boards, but is there a version supported by MAME (or some other software program)?

Well it definately wouldn't be in mame.  Try misfit mame.

Well it definately wouldn't be in mame.

Why not?  It's included on an authentic dedicated arcade machine... released by Teamplay...

That said... it was released in 2005... and likely not to be included in MAME any time soon.

That's exactly why.  It's an unwritten rule in mame that you don't emulate games that are still in the arcade.  Well, there are exceptions, but usually it's because the system is so complex and processor intensive that even if they start work on it now, it could be several years before it's playable.

Misfit mame doesn't seem to have as strict a moral code.  The best example I could give is D2K (Donkey Kong 2) which isn't in mame because it's so new and yet is already in misfit mame.  Of course I've always found that one silly because the guy is stealing code and graphics from nintendo and making a profit from it, so who cares if we cut into his profit margin, but to each his own.

Did some more research into this one, because I'm not real familiar with the cabinet.  I think you are mistaken as to what you saw S unless you are talking about some sort of rom hack board.

http://www.ultimate-80s.com/Products/Donkey-Kong-Classic-Arcade-Collection-Video-Game-System__9.aspx

Notice the line:

"Namco’s retro-styled, 3-in-1 cabinet has been updated with new features previously not available in the 1980s, including a 25” monitor."

In other words they did it the other way around.  Mario is still horizontal, but they hacked donkey kong and the others to run horizontally as well.  Or more likely the pcb inside the machine emulates the games so the screen orientation can easily be flipped.

I'm just guessing here though, I really don't know for sure.

That's a 25 incher alright, and yeah it's vertical.  I doubt there's a special rom though, rather like I said, the chips inside are probably emulating the original games and they are just flipping the video output.  I doubt it would be of much help though..... while a horizontal game on a 25 inch vertical monitor might look good, on a 19 inch it'd look just awful.

According to a post on the KLOV forum:
"I believe the Mario Bros. is actully the version from the Donkey Kong Classics Team Play cab. The screen has been streched on the vert and is slightly cropped on the sides and some of the sound are off but the gameplay is still dead on. "

I take it from this post that the game is simply resized via the hardware and not in fact a new/custom rom.
