Ultimarc to Canada
« on: July 27, 2003, 02:33:34 pm »
Looks like I'm getting hit with every order from Ultimarc to Canada with a hefty import charge.  Just wondering how many others are getting the same bills from a "Global Logistics"?  It really is a piss off too, since they take the value of say $50 USD, convert it using an exchange rate evidently set in 1992 (in this case 1.472!!!!!!) for a landed value of $74.  So off this they take GST, then just add in an arbitrary $8 just for the hell of it.  Oh and heaven forbid you not pay, they'll be mailing you and calling you.  Last phone call I asked them where they get their conversion and brokerage charges.  They said that since Andy has given the carrier legal right to charge this fee, they can charge pretty much whatever they feel like (not said exactly this way, but that was the gist).  Oh and on the conversion factor?  "We get it from the standard books".  Of course she had no idea what book that was, but considering I'm seeing an actual current exchange of 1.378, this book must be ancient history.  Does this seem a scam or am I making too big a deal out of paying an extra $15 on top of the already included shipping?

(Oh but don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying Ultimarc for the kickass products) :)

Anybody else getting this or are they picking on me? :sigh: Well off to pay the piper before they stink up my credit rating   :'(

I am in Canada and they sent me a bill for 2.75 extra fee to cover the import of a ipac.  It was cheap so I paid them.  That was it.

I got some stuff from the US and Canada Post charged GST plus $5

The worst was UPS who charged GST, and a fee of about $15 which doubled the cost of my purchase.

Global Logistics? What happened to Airbourne Express? They were fabulous. No brokerage fees and no duty. Where does Global Logistics come into play??The last time I ordered from Andy (last two times actually) there wasn't a nickle in extra fees. Considering an IPAC is already 70 bucks door to door, including the exchange we don't need any extra fees thank you. And honestly, if this is a new carrier with new fees I might (sadly) have to consider alternatives.

Maybe you've just awakened the customs gods? I have a bad feeling about this though. Where's Druin when you need him, hehe. Doesn't Druin's keyboard interface have a nice ring to it?  ;D It would be heaven to have a Canadian supplier.

It's still airborne express, and I get quite a few orders from Andy.  I can't complain about the service, it's like 3 day shipping across the pond.  This Global Logistics has hit me about 3 times now, I'm just getting tired of them doing it sometimes and not other times, seems to be a scam.  They are some kind of border mafia, much like the UPS scum (oh I know ALLLLLLL about UPS "brokerage fee").  I sure wouldn't mind paying a couple bucks more, but $15 for every $50 starts to right suck. :P

It is simple.

Move to the US, you won't have any GST/Brokerage fee problems!  :D ;D :D

I know a couple slot car guys up there and they have the same problems.

I got dinged about 2 weeks after I got my package from Andy.  they sent a notice saying they wanted $9 or something.  I let it sit for 3 months before finally paying it, but they never sent anything aside from the initial invoice.

I try to avoid courier services when getting stuff imported into Canada, they all seem to suck.  Plain old normal post office seems to avoid most of the charges.  Sometimes you don't have a choice though...

I'm so tired of getting reamed by brokerage fees that I exhaust every local source before I import anything anymore. If I'm in the market to Ebay anything I even try Ebay.ca first. It does help.

You'd be surprised what you can find locally. Happs supplier, all hardware, you can find cheap computer sources, cabinets. Oscar USPS's his spinners so that's not too bad. The only real hole is keyboard encoders I'm afraid and in the past that wasn't a problem! Grrr. [tongue in cheek]Who wants to rip off Andy's design and sell it out of Canada? [/tongue in cheek] You Americans could hardly complain either considering exchange.  :)

I won't use courier services to Canada anymore exactly for this reason.  You know what happens when you sit on an invoice like this?  The bill gets sent back to the sender (in my case, that's me!) for a non-paying recipient, and the sender gets the opportunity to either pay the bill or have their account suspended.  I got stung like this twice sending products to Canadian customers before I learned.
