Kortek KI-2-VO Vertical Collapse (Fixed)
« on: March 01, 2010, 07:14:03 pm »
I got a Kortek KI-2-VO with vertical collapse.  I figured I would start by giving it a cap kit so I ordered one from Bob Roberts.  However, the one I ordered was KI-2-VOA.  Now most of the caps matched up, but there were three that were different than the stated values in the board itself verses the monitor schematic/OEM Cap list.  They are as follows:
C210 10uf 160v is installed on the board but the cap kit says to use 22uf 100v
C610 33uf 200v is installed on the board but the cap kit says to use 100uf 160v
C214 has no cap installed on my board but the cap kit says to use 22uf 100v

Now my question is the cap kit I bought an upgrade for the chassis or did I just buy the wrong one?  Also, is there a common failure point for the vertical collapse on this particular chassis?  ie; should I check anything else or replace something else before trying to fire this back up?  Also, on TH601 the casing of this component is cracked and lost some pieces. I'm not sure what this component is as it doesn't appear on the schematic or parts listing. Any info/help would be greatly appreciated. -Jarrett

a vert frame collapse is normally down down to the following
voltage feed to ic missing
ic fooked
bad solder joint on yoke connector
bad solder joint or faulty pot on remote board

as for your caps,my rule is to put in what comes out unless there is a service bulletin to recommend a change of values

the component th601 sounds like a ptc for the degauss but a photo will help ID it

Thanks for the reply grantspain.  I will check for bad solder joints as you mentioned.  Forgive me but I'm not up to some of the lingo..."ic" and "ic fooked"  I have no idea what those mean. lol  I will see if I can get a decent shot of the TH601 and post it.

ic=integrated circuit  or microchip
fooked =broken(english slightly polite slang for a far worse word)

The cap kit fixed the vertical collapse.  Caps 609 and 213 seemed to have leakage from the bottom so I'm assuming they were bad and the cause of the problem.  Thanks for the help grantspain.  Another cab has been brought back to life and saved from the landfill.  :applaud:
