Project 64 game-specific configs?
« on: February 27, 2010, 07:40:40 pm »
I know N64 on a cab is dodgy. But I'm putting a dozen or so of my playable faves on there.

The only emu giving me a re-map headache is Project 64. I was able to find and download a hack that enabled esc to quit, and Id love to have game-specific layouts for buttons (as in, I have a great layout for mariokart but it sucks for everything else), esp if they can be autoloaded.

is this possible with a plugin or something? kind of a bummer.

I went through the games I wanted to to include on the cab, and came up with this configuration which allows 90% of them, and is both intuitive and comfortable:

B     A     R

Z  C-dn  C-lf

It tested really well for Mariokart which was the priority (powerslides are intuitive, and I use my thumb for 'item') but also works for Starfox64, Mario Party, Super Smash Bros, Diddy Kong racing, Beetle Adventure Racing, Mario Tennis, Bomberman 64, Mario 64, some others.

Since my player 3 and 4 only have 4 buttons, their layout is

B    A

Z    R

They lose brakes and turbos in Starfox, and handbrake in beetle racing but Kart, Smash Bros, Tennis and Party are unaffected at least (and all players lose camera buttons sometimes. No biggie though)

Untested on Sin and Punishment, Worms and Ocarina (Losing Ocarina kills me, but I doubt I'd stand in front of a cab for hours.) Maybe I can get away with not having a top C and right C) I knew I'd lose 007 after 2 mins of testing with a digital stick.

Anyhow, until game-specific configs are released or hacked (ZSNES does this no problem) I highly recommend this set-up. What do you guys use?

It sure is an interesting challenge and I experienced the same disappointment with Goldeneye :-( Fortunately I still have my N64 and carts :-)

My key mappings are:

N64 Controller Btn / Arcade Cabinet (P1) / Arcade Cabinet (P2) / Keys (P1)            / Keys (P2)
Joystick (U/D/L/R) / P1 - U/D/L/R           / P2 - U/D/L/R           / Cursor U/D/L/R     / r/f/d/g
Start                  / P1                         / P2                        / 1                       / 2
A                       / Player 1 - Btn 1       / Player 2 - Btn 1      / Ctrl                     / a
B                       / Player 1 - Btn 2       / Player 2 - Btn 2      / Left Alt               / s
Z                       / Player 1 - Btn 5       / Player 2 - Btn 5      / z                        / i
Camera (c-buttons) - Not configured

I simply have 4 different Project64 Directories,

E:\HyperSpin\EMU\Project64_Racers\
E:\HyperSpin\EMU\Project64_Fighting\
E:\HyperSpin\EMU\Project64_Adventure\
E:\HyperSpin\EMU\Project64_Simple\

Yeah, id just run multiple directories of the emulator if your front end allows you to.

In MALA I believe you can have it remap the controls for each game selected instead of simply remapping for each new emulator it encounters.

I have all my PC Games in a separate folder and then each time I choose a PC Game to load via MALA it remaps my layout for the chosen game.   You can do the same thing for all games within your N64 emulator.

Of course, I am assuming you are using MALA and that you are using a keyboard encoder which can be remapped on the fly (IPAC, Hagstrom, etc...)
