Looking for someone to build a control panel off of my design
« on: February 28, 2011, 06:51:51 pm »
I am looking to get a single player panel cut, I have it designed but I have no equipment or tools to do the job. The Panel measures 23x13, all holes are 1 1/8" standard plus a 3 1/4" hole for a Ultimarc U-Trak, and notching for t-molding. Also if you can provide a matching piece of plexi that would be great but it isn't a deal breaker. The box will be 21.5 x 11.5 with an inside depth of 3". It would be nice to have a bit of a slope to the panel but again not a deal breaker. I have attached a low res image of the panel for reference, I have a 300dpi PSD image that I can provide for construction purposes.

Hit me up with a reply or PM if you are interested in doing this and we can discuss the rest of the details.

got a 3d sketch of your control panel?  i may be interested, but would like to see some concrete plans with dimensions.  with the top panel made, the plexi is easily duplicated using the panel as a template.

I could render one in AutoCAD easily enough but it probably isn't necessary. I made a few adjustments to the top panel which simplifies the cutting process. The bow at the front is gone. Also all of the holes are parallel now so no funky measurements. I also drew out all the panels except the bottom fully dimensioned, since it's just a blank 20x10 sheet. The side panels have a 5 degree slope to them, should be easy enough. These two pieces plus the top will have molding so they have their corners rounded with a 1/2" radius.

A little more needs to be explained about the mounting of the trackball. The instructions call for a 3 3/8" hole for everything to fit snug but that is not a standard hole saw size so they suggest using a 3 1/2" hole instead. That causes an issue where the trim needs to be glued to the trackball to keep it in place which makes it a permanent addition to the panel. So I would greatly prefer a 3 3/8" hole. Finally for the trim to sit flush with the panel, the top panel needs to be 5/8" MDF with a 1/8" recessed area for the TB to sit in and 1/8" plexi.

There's a lot more information plus pics of the mounting in this thread to give ideas on how to do the 3 3/8" hole.
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=83988.0

So here's my final want list:

Top Panel - 23" x 13" x 5/8" Corners rounded with 1/2" radius and cut for T-molding. 1/8" recess for flush mounting trackball.
2 Side Panels - 11.5" x 4.75" x 3/4" 5 degree slope, corners rounded with 1/2" radius and cut for T-molding.
Front Panel - 20" x 3.75" x 3/4"
Back Panel - 20" x 4.75" x 3/4"
Bottom Panel - 20" x 10" x 3/4"

All holes except trackball are standard 1 1/8" size
Trackball: 3 3/8" hole

Plexi: 1/8" cut like top panel

If this build  is in your realm of expertise, let me know and shoot me links to your project threads with similar work if you have them. And if you need more info from me, let me know. I have this drawn out in Photoshop as a 1:1 300dpi image plus what I threw together in AutoCAD. I can provide either or both to the builder.

One other thing of note. I can design stuff all day long but I have never built any of this in the real world so I am open to suggestions on how this can be better, materials used, the way the box is built, etc. The important things to me are the layout of the holes and getting the trackball flush monted. Everything else I can be flexible on.

I've yet to see a CP that looked good where the trackball mounting plate was visible.

The 3 3/8" hole saw is not that hard to find.

I got this one on Amazon:

Good to know there is a hole saw out there. Here's a few of the key pics from the other thread showing the placement of the trackball.

Here is what the 1/8" routered spot looks like on the underside:

And here are the final results from above:
