Older Dos compatible pci audio & video card
« on: February 22, 2010, 04:56:21 pm »
Looking to buy a audio & video card for older dos and windows 95 gaming.

I only have pci slots so that is the only type I am looking for.

for sound I would like to get a sound blaster pro or sound blaster 16 but if there is better out there please correct me as I have not been into older games parts for some time and forgot whats good and whats not for the older systems.

for the video card I was think a 8mb

my onboard video is 8mb but I do have a trident 4mb but I think a 8mb would be the best but this is another part need suggestions on as I have no clue on what cards are good for both windows 95 & dos in 8mb

I also onlt want cards that come with drivers

i have a sound blaster live! PCi ct4780 and I have downloaded driver after driver for 3 day's now and none of them work so I am done bothering with that driver goofy incompatible peice of junk lol.

Hey northern,

I don't think there are any PCI sound cards that will work in BOTH DOS and Windows.  I haven't come across any and I've tried a bunch.

I've only been able to get sound in Windows, not DOS with a PCI sound card.

Maybe someone with more experience can chime in, but I think you'll need an ISA sound card if you want sound in BOTH DOS and Windows.

Since you only have PCI slots, you may be out of luck.

I used to run DOS MAME with a PCI sound card, so I know it can work.  I cleaned out my computer room the other day, but can't remember if I kept that old stuff, or threw it out.

I ended up getting these new for cheap:

sound blaster 16 PCI new in box $11.00 shipped

ATI RAGE 3D LT PRO new in box $12.00 shipped

I would not have minded used but these come with their own driver's disk wich is great becuase I have had enough looking for the right one's for the right cards type thing.

The games I am trying to run say sound blaster 16 so I know its the right one but you saying it may not work in pci bum's me out but I dont see why they would not work as I can get sound out of a way newer sound card in dosbox on the newer pc and the dos pc I am working on now has onboard sound that works in windows and dos.

I am pretty sure you just enable the sound blaster settings in the pc's bios if it is a problem

I am by no means a dos wiz though and it may not work so hopefully I will get lucky and it will work.

I also am seling a like new Radeon Diamond 9250 pro 256MB PCI card

example pic:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Y5EN4HVVL.jpg

works and look's great still.

asking $20.00 shipped

I think I am all set on this post for now and it can be closed but if anyone is interested in the 9250 just PM me thanks.

Also thanks for the help and looking.

Northerngames, if I remember right the install program for the Sound Blaster 16 will update your autoexec.bat file automatically so that the drivers for the SB16 are loaded on boot.  Assuming that's the case, there won't be much for you to do, but if you need any help, let me know.  I still run an old computer with an SBPro in it so I can play retro games without using DosBox, heh.

Cool thanks.

I tried dosbox on my current pc and can get some games working but I dont like how it is setup and really dont care for it much becuase it need's/missing a simple G.U.I. like mame or mamewah etc. where once you have the games set you just pick them off the list type setup.

maybe it is like that and I could not figure it out too though  :applaud:

Northern,

There are Front Ends for DOSBox to do that.  I use D-Fend Reloaded.  You can check it out here- http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/

Good to know.  Are there any PCI Sound Cards that have a Gameport built in that will work in real DOS mode?  Hard to play those DOS games without a Joystick/Gamepad that plugs into the Gameport.

+1 on Defend Reloaded. Great little FE that makes running DOS/Box (DOS games) a snap. Farily customizeable too. I got mine set up so I can click on screenshot/icons to pick games to play. Even on some of the old games that run really fast on our newer systems, there is a setting that lets you slow the CPU down some so the games play fairly close to original.

Maybe the mods should move this post over to the software section?  ;D

I tried all the FE's out there and could not get any of them to work but as I was saying prior I am not into much and have not used it in 15+ years.

most decent make sound card do have gameport's built inot them like the SB 16

the live! card I had came with one also but I could not find the right 98 drivers for it xp was fine but the 98 driver are M.I.A. somewhere's.

If you need help with Defend I may be able too give you some tips. Went pretty easy for me. I've put it on both a XP and Vista machine.

Are there any actual DOS Drivers out there for the Sound Blaster 16 PCI Sound Card Model 4740?

IIRC, the driver cd that came with this card only had drivers for Windows operating systems and not DOS.  Same with Creative's website, no DOS drivers for this card, just Windows.

So, what you're saying Justin, is that you don't need a DOS specific driver as long as you install the Windows driver, that it will automatically install the DOS driver for you?

possible for a mod to move this topic to the dos/wincab forum and I will change the header that way its no longer in the BST.

I came across this.

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/115903-compilation-of-creative-sound-blaster-live-drivers-for-windows-9x/

I tried that CT4780 pci Live! card and them drivers did not work either and reported it as the Live! (Value) drivers but it is a live! only card and not he value version so it may be why they did not work either so I give up on that card for sure maybe it is just broken from being used up and old..

Mmm, no.  I may have been going back too far in time to when there were DOS drivers for every sound card you could buy.  But, I found drivers here

http://dosmame.mameworld.info/other.php

so it may be worth checking out to see if those'll do.

Is he looking for a frontend to DOSBox, or a DOS frontend to <arcade emulator>?  If it's the second, you have essentially two choices:
* ArcadeOS, and
* Game Launcher.
I like glaunch better, but aos has been more compatible on my old machines.

I finally got a great dos system going.

I ended up getting the mentioned cards prior and everything runs great in pure dos.

the sound blaster 16 pci came with it's own drivers disk along with drivers for a few more cards but in the custom option it left an option to tick to also install dos drivers.

I ticked it and now have sound in windows and pure dos so that was the correct card I was after it also made the onboard sound terrible when compared there's no more clicking or poopin or slow mode speech sounds.

everything is good though and I am all set on it now.

I use a up to date pc for modern gaming and no need for dosbox for me anymore I could never get it to run but a few games and half the time they did not work right anyhow either sound or video ploblems so I wanted a real dos pc to avoid all that and now have one.
