Pic's of my upcoming Cabinet ***COMPLETE***
« on: July 26, 2003, 06:19:09 am »
NOTE FOR LATEST PICTURES SCROLL TO BOTTOM

Hey guys, just thought i'd share with you the fruits of our labour, (well, particularly my dad, where ALOT of the credit goes to him) of the last few weeks with some WIP pictures of our cabinet.

It's loosely based on a "Lowboy" Aussie styled cabinet, but we are making it our own, (but similar) design.

At the moment, it is essentially just the frame, ( The main things we still need to do the top + sides of the control panel, keyboard drawer, monitor mounts etc. Then we'll worry about coin doors, paint, T-molding and whatever other snazzy things we can chuck on there.) But it's coming along well.

You can check it out at my newly (made in about 2 mins :\) designed Lycos website!

http://members.lycos.co.uk/kyalwebspace/cabinet.htm

I will keep it updated with more pics as we progress further.

That's going to be a pretty cabinet. I like curvy machines. (I got one too.)

Wow I love the curves ...  and the tool collection!  Geez!  Even a cherry picker!   ;D

What's your plan on mounting that monitor?

What's your plan on mounting that monitor?

We plan to install pine wood mounts (L shaped block for the rear and another straight for the front),to hold the back and front of the monitor up, which we will then bolt it onto. We've actually made these mounts, we're just waiting for the weekend to put em in.

I think we'll simply make a thin bezel out of  wood... which we'll cover in smoked Plexi. Anyone got any better ideas?

It's ALIIIIIVEEEEE!!!!

Here's a picture of it playing Street Fighter Alpha 3. Quite a bit still to do though, gotta attach the coin door, bezel, keyboard drawer, speaker holes etc.

We have a fair bit made up, like the rear doors etc, but we don't plan to add them till later.

any comments/constructive criticism is welcome. :)

Where are those speakers going to go? They look too large to fire down onto the monitor, but maybe I'm wrong.

I simply hide my speakers inside the cab.  No need to cut any more holes.  Cab looks nice. ;D

Well I've come to realize that even with speakers loud enough to push the sound out without holes, the sound still comes out muffled like someone put their hand over the speaker if it doesn't have a proper escape. This does not hold true for bass, but holds true for med and hi range sounds.

I've got a good suggestion for you, though. Remove the joys until the rest of the thing is finished. Many people here will tell you that once they got their machine functional they couldn't stop playing it long enough to finish it. This happenned to me for probably 6 months.  :)

We plan to put a sloped plate just infront of the speakers there and behind the marquee light, that push down the sound into speaker grill holes in the normal speaker place (e.g., just below and behind the marquee) So it will have holes. Hopefully the sound will be pushed down and come out through the grill and sound okay. Failing that however, I might just get some car speakers and install them directly into the position.

I could do that... but that would prevent me from playing it and.... Oh...  :-\

Thanks for the advice :)

cut some holes put some speaker grill all the way to the front edge under the marquee and it will look good and not block the sound

Hey guys, just an update on the progress so far.

Almost ready for painting, just need to finish off the speaker holes and backing. I have the coin door, (well, the half of it that I DO have) installed, and the keyboard drawer is ready and working. It's almost seamless and you barely notice it's there.

Other notable facts include a rear door at the back that locks/unlocks, two rear wheels attatched to the base (can't see them in these pics) that allows you to pull the cabinet over by the hand holds, and push it around on it's rear, to allow for easy movement and make it virtually immoveable when flat. Also have the custom bezel, which turned out great despite initial fears.

These pics really don't do it justice, I think I need to fiddle with my camera a bit more so I can get a clearer image.

G'day Iso,

Great to see the pics of your cab, it's going to look great when you've painted it. I read in one of your earlier post you were going to buy bat handles from Ozstick and I notice on your picture you have ball tops, did you get them from Ozstick? If so are they the switchable between 4 and 8 way ones? And if they are switchable how easy is to do and how do you find them when playing games? I think I have asked enough questions for now, looking forward to seeing more pictures.

Hey man. How's yours coming along? Is it a resto or built from scratch? I'd like to see some pics of yours if possible :)

Yes, I ordered my balltops from Ozstick. They're a great company which I would reccommend. Very helpful and informative, and they sent my order straight away :).

Unfortunately, they are not switchable, but I have found they work just fine with 4 way games, about as good as you're going to get with 8 ways at least. I've had no real trouble with Pacman and other 4 way games I've tried on it, only really missed a passage once or twice. If you're really into 4-way games however i'd suggest you get a dedicated 4way somewhere else on the panel (probably could pick one up at southern star or around the place), but otherwise if you just casually play them like i do, 8-ways work just fine.

If you want to get a restrictor plate, perhaps you could make one up yourself, I believe Oscar has some instructions on his site. You'd probably need to make one up custom for this style joystick though... I believe you have to swap it in and out everytime you wish to play 4 way games, so unless you stick with a certain game for a long time it may be a better option for a dedicated 4 way.

Now it's my turn for questions ;)

Know any place where I can get T-moulding, or a good Iron on moulding equivalent here in South Aus? :)
Or do you know of a good place to print out custom artwork and the like, or somewhere where I can get a coin mech/facia to fit my door... The guy at Southern Star didn't seem to know what I was talking about... maybe I'll take a photo next time.

I haven't got a digital camera to take a picture and haven't bothered about borrowing one because it's just a make do
cabinet until I can afford to make my dream cabinet. It's just a gottlieb control pod from a showcase cabinet, 4 players no trackball or spinner and it sets next to my computer desk and I have added a ledge at the back which a portable TV sits on, all hooked up to my computer, when I can afford to upgrade my computer I'll put this computer in the cabinet and sell it on Ebay. I also own a Galaxian cocktail table, I need to get another coin mech, I'll probably buy one from OzStick and then sell that on Ebay too. With the money from these I'll be able to start my project.

As far as T-Moulding is concerned I haven't had much luck locating any either, a carpenter I know say he knows another carpenter who uses it and he will let me know where I can get some, but everytime I see him and ask him about it, he says he keeps forgetting to ask, I'll just have to keep on pestering him. This fellow did some carpentry in my kitchen and he used that iron on stuff on the edges of some braces he made, I queried him on the stuff and he seemed to think T-Moulding was a much more rugged option, but if you are interested I'll ask him where you get it from, what colours and what cost.  I only get to see him at work now and again so it might be a while before I see him, though I am rostered Sunday night and he usually comes in then.

On the subject of coin mech/facias to fit your door I'm not too sure maybe Dickensons or Amusementworx might be able to help but I am just guessing.

I have attached a picture of my Gottlieb control pod as it was when I bought for $50 off Ebay, it looks different now because it was missing 2 joysticks and some buttons plus I have the telly on the back aswell.

Keep posting pictures

Thanks ;D

I was thinking about the possibility of a trackball, (never really played many games with that or a spinner) but I figured with the lack of money I have at the moment, and the actual amount of times I'd use it. I'd give it a miss this time. I may actualy make another control panel in the future which will incorporate it if I feel the need however.

What do you guys with multiple (swappable) control panels use in regard to keyboard encoders? do you just use a new one for each CP? I was thinking of making a swappable Steering wheel, but it won't be for awhile. I'd also like to hook my Xbox into it in one stage as well. Maybe i'll simply build (or buy.. if I can find one :)) a cockpit cab sometime in the future.

Retro, love the gottlieb control panel. That would be cool just to wheel infront of a TV or PC for a day or two of gameplaying, then easily being able to store it back into a closet somewhere when needed.

I see exactly what you mean! I'm trying to earn some money too to see if i can get something fancy to play the good ol'ones...  ;D

Well, if you need a reason to install a Spinner - "720 degrees", and a trackball - "Marble Madness"!

Good luck in your future tasks!  :)

Iso, I caught up with the carpenter I was talking about and sure enough he still hasn't asked his mate about T-Moulding, I then asked him about that iron on edging stuff, he's told me to find out how much you want, what width and what colour and he will get me what you need for free. So If you decide to go with the iron on stuff give me the details and I'll let you know when I've got it. ;D

Wow! :o thanks!

I'll be prepared to give you whatever money necessary though if you want. :)

What I'm looking for is black moulding, (it's generally the same as the rounded T Moulding, without the stem of the T right?) 16mm thick, and i'm not quite sure how much I'll need of it just yet. I assume it would be quite a bit however, looking at my cabinet.

Iso, well you better get your tape measure out and find out how much you need, sooner you can do this the sooner I can chase it up for you, he said he would get it for free, apparently he's got rolls of the stuff lying around, not sure if he's got the rounded stuff, if he hasn't then it might cost something but if he has a roll of it, you'll get what you need for free!

Okay, just a rough estimate, with an allowance incase I do not have enough/make mistakes, comes to a total of 14 metres or so.

If he doesn't have the rounded edgebanding for free, and can have access to it I'll be happy to pay whatever is neccessary.

Thanks alot for this, you're a real champ. :D

Iso,

Unfortunately the carpenter doesn't have that rounded stuff but he's checking with a mate to see if he's got any. This probably means it might cost something but I'll let you know before I commit to grabbing it.

No probs. I was prepared to pay anyway. I don't know if the iron on stuff is available with the rounded edging, but i'm hoping.

Ok the cabinet is finally complete. I don't have a coin mech for the door yet, but that will come in due time...

Here she is in all her glory. The pic's don't really do it justice. There are two green buttons also where they should be blue and red respectively, but the bloody cheap things snapped on me :(

Great looking Cabinet Iso.  Well done!!  Love the blue colour.  Marquee looks great too.  Where did you get the Marquee printed??  I'm yet to get a decent Marquee into my cab and was wondering where in Adelaide I could get one printed and how much it would cost?

You're in Adelaide? Wow, cool, I didn't know that.

I got it done at a place called itchytoe webdesign and printing. Nice little shop down by castle plaza. My mum does alot of work with them, so I actually got it printed for free. I didn't complain about the very visible red mark for this reason. Sorry I can't help you with any other places however.

The marquee is actually simply plain paper, (albeit it was A2 or something.)
I have it mounted with clear plexi infront, and white acrylic behind, which "absorbs" the light, and doesn't make it completely see through, simply illuminated. You only really can tell it's paper if you are up really close however.

As for the cabinet, i'm not exactly sure what cabinet it was from. I simply got the vague shape of a "Die Hard Arcade" (obviously a conversion.. the marquee was black and white photocopied  :-\) I then modified it to fit my cabinet heights and specifications. If i have one regret, I think I made the cabinet a few inches too wide, otherwise it's perfect for use.

I got it done at a place called itchytoe webdesign and printing. Nice little shop down by castle plaza. My mum does alot of work with them, so I actually got it printed for free. I didn't complain about the very visible red mark for this reason.

If anyone asks, tell them it's a cursor.

Your cabinet looks great, your marquee looks superb in the first picture.

You have to let us know what grade you get for your project, if it ain't an A, your teacher doesn't know $hit.

What sort of boring projects did the other students do?

When I was at school I made a pencil case, a letter opener and a sandwich cutter. (You make a MAME cabinet.)

How times have changed.
