Bolts on galaga control panel?
« on: February 11, 2010, 12:01:47 am »
hey guys im building a galaga cocktail machine and i relized that there are these bolts on the control panel that seem to have no perpose. I've reseived my overlays and the have the holes punched out for them and everything, yet no where can i find anything about the galaga cocktails having a plexiglass cover on the control panels. any ideas?!?! also if anybody knows what type of bolts they are (ex. carraige, rounded fillips, flat) that would be a big help.
thanks

Could be a modification made by the factory after getting complaints of curling edges.

I would assume it's the 8-32 x 1/2" carriage bolts referred to here in the manual.

THe PacMan I restored also had those holes. The overlay is not just a sticker on those... its THICK. So to prevent people from picking at and peeling up the corners, there's small bolts or screws as an extra measure. I ended up having to use tiny screw bolts. Couldn't find small enough carriage bolts (even the Nintendo style ones were too big)

Aha...as I suspected. I've seen that on other cabs too. Of course I've also seen several control panels where the bolts are there, and the customers have still peeled the entire CP overlay off AROUND the bolt too. *sigh*

My Rolling Thunder panel's overlay was on like IRON. Back when I pulled it off, I wasn't 'smaaaart' as I is now, and didn't use a hair dryer. It came of in a million little flakes. Then I had to use acid to get the adhesive off. They must have used some SERIOUS sticky on that overlay.  :censored:

okay thanks guys. so apparently they were used to secure the underlay, and im assuming that according to the manual they used #8-32 x 1/2" carraige bolts. but i think im gonna use some #8 fillips with a rounded top, idk we'll see what they have at the store.

Mike's got 'em
Don't see em.

Carriage Bolts #8-32 x 1/2" w/ KEP nuts

I presume they're the same as on my upright PacMan.

My "Galaxian" has very small Phillips head sheet metal screws in those four spots.
(but it's listed as such in the Galaxian manual)

Quick way to verify what your Galaga would take is to look at the holes in the metal panel.... are they really small round holes or are they square holes ?

Hard to tell in this pic, but the holes on arcadeshops's NEW panels seem to have large enough holes for carriage bolts. (can't tell if they are squared though)

Personally, I'd rather have the carriage bolts in there either way.

Nope. See Kevin's post. Little screws in the corners to hold the overlay. The holes are even threaded I think (my Pac cocktail's seemed to be).

Interesting, the little screws in the corners to hold the overlay on the upright are #8-32 1" carriage bolts (and the holes in the CP are square).

yeah i agree, cause on the overlay the "little" holes are circles and the joystick mounting holes were squares, for carraige bolts. which is why i doubt that they are carraige bolts.

Carriage bolts have square necks.  They should be 8-32 x 1/2" and black.  I have about 1000 of them if you need some email me as I rarely check this site.  chris at tokens only dot com

We're talking cocktail, not upright. The parts differ. We're gonna confuse the guy.

When in doubt, hit the manual's parts list!

Pac Man cocktail uses four #8-32 carriage bolts to hold the joystick, and four #6 x 1/4 "phil. trs. hd. scr."

I assume that means Phillips ?? Head Screw. (What does "TRS." mean?)

Galaga cocktail: Same thing, but the manual says 14 screws required. I think that's a typo and meant to say 4.

Hey, guess what, Mike's Arcade DOES carry them, but for some reason they do not show up under "Midway Parts" on their site!

So "TRS" = Truss

Galaga cocktail: Same thing, but the manual says 14 screws required. I think that's a typo and meant to say 4.

But if you count the three on each side to "mount" the metal panel underneath to the cabinet itself then it would work out to 14. (same style screw)
3 mount screws + 4 overlay screws X 2 sides = 14 screws

And that would also mean the 8-32 x 1/2" carriage bolts listed in the manual are strictly for the joystick then ? (8 total, 4 on each side)

Phillips Truss Head Screw perhaps? Checked the Machinary's Handbook and that's the only one that seems to fit.
