Wii question for the experts...
« on: February 05, 2010, 05:59:35 pm »
I fear the modchip on my old Wii may have given up the ghost.  Kids broke the switch off the external board.  Even original discs won't load.

So, I'd like to remove it and do the softmod that has since been created.  No brainer.

Heres the question:

What happens to the Wii if I remove the chip and let it update?  Its got ancient FW on it.  Will the remnants of the homebrew stuff cause grief, or will it just all automagically disappear and become a shiny new virgin Wii?
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

It could brick your Wii. Do the softmod without updating the firmware, then you can update all the IOSes to their current versions later. I use Pimp My Wii.

Theoretically, it SHOULD just magically disappear.  But Ginsu's right, and it could potentially brick it.

You could just format your Wii system, then update.  But I'm guessing that's not what you want to do, though backing up isn't time consuming at all on the Wii.

If you did format, you'd have the latest in FW, and still be able to reinstall homebrew with the new methods.

I'd softmod, back up the NAND, then patch all the IOSs then update. most bannerbomb packages include apps in the homebrew channel to update the system first to 4 then the one after 4

Of course, you can always brick it, nobody is going to say you can't.

But really it depends on which version of the system menu you update to... it's pretty safe to go up to 4.0.  That gets you direct SD access which really makes softmodding easier.  If you go up to 4.1, that's just a minor update, but 4.2 is going to stub out all of the known cIOS slots and break any homebrew/hacks that you have in there.  That doesn't kill anything permanently, though.  You can then restore your trucha bug, use that to drop all of the required cIOS back in, and it will all work again.

This is probably the best guide out there at the moment.

If you decide to go so far as using a hard drive let us know.  I have done a lot of research lately into the various cIOS revs and how they affect the various homebrews out there.

Definitely, if you do this, first thing you want to do is install bootmii to boot2 (I am guessing your Wii is old enough for that) and then back up the NAND as suggested above.  Doing that will gain you the ability to unbrick your Wii if something goes wrong.

Pulled the chip.  Did the bootmii thing. Backed up the NAND.  Updated to 4.2.  Deleted the stubs.  Did the rest of the softmod.

All went well.  Sitting at 4.2U.

Problem is, the DVD still won't spin up.  Maybe it wasn't the chip after all.   :censored:

Working on the USB thing now...  Grr...

It doesn't like my generic newegg self powered drive, or the powered maxtor external.  Tried all combinations of ports possible.

Formatted the drive with WBFS manager, copied over an iso or two, but neither coverfloader or neogamma will see the usb drives.

Thoughts?
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

Hm, thanks.  The enclosure I've got was reported as working by a few others, but I'm wondering if my Wii is borderline on the USB ports.  I'll have to pick up one thats listed and see what happens.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

Make sure you're using the right port for the cios you are using with the loader.  The modded cios will go to a specific port, not just look for a drive.  Test is easy enough, just put it on the other USB port.

That right there is a great drive that will work perfectly.  I'm using that exact drive and have been suggesting it to many others, none of whom are reporting problems with compatibility.  It is externally powered and powers on/off with the Wii, both ideal here.  Plus it looks pretty good too.

Which filesystem are you using?  WBFS Manager has been redone and is now called Game Manager.  GX supports NTFS, fat32, and WBFS.  If you use NTFS or fat32 you can use the drive for other storage or put your other homebrew on it - but support for those are not perfectly stable yet.  WBFS is mature and works really well but makes it dedicated Wii game only storage.

Best cios IMO for WBFS is 249 rev 14... for NTFS or fat32 you need 222.  I haven't played with that so I can't recommend a specific rev.

Woot!  Switched to game manager instead of WBFS manager and it works!

Thanks experts!
