New MAME Startup Video v.2
« on: December 25, 2009, 12:04:04 am »
Merry Christmas all!

Finally!  I'm done!  I've created a nice gift from Santa for all you BYOACers!  A kick ass MAME intro.

Here's a preview (this is a NEW version):

It comes in two flavors:
640 x 480
and
800 x 600

Brought to you by DeLuSioNaL and RetrowareTV.com.  Originally I produced this intro for RetrowareTV for their opening sequence of their show.  However, permission was granted for me to tailor it to MAME folks.  The project was created in Adobe Aftereffects and finalized in Sony Vegas Pro.

This is free to distribute and should not be sold.  However, this readme.txt file MUST be included with any distribution.  It should not be distributed with illegal roms, software or wares.  Please respect the author in abiding in these rules.  Thanks!

Special Thanks to"
-  Saint at BYOAC.com for hosting the files
-  Ito Bandito at RetrowareTV.com for allowing us to share this with fellow arcade enthusiasts.
-  The MAME/arcade building community for their contribution to my arcade projects.  This is how I give back!

Merry Christmas and Enjoy!

Looks very nice and Merry Christmas to you.  I am guessing the retroware version was a little longer and included multiple systems?  FYI: You included the Super Nintendo version of Super Punch Out in this version rather than the MAME (arcade) version.... I am not sure if that was intentional or not... and the video is kickass regardless.

Looks very nice and I don't mean to be a wet blanket,  but did you realize you included the Super Nintendo version of Super Punch Out rather than the standard arcade version?
Yes.  Originally this was by design, since it was tailored for Retroware TV and they wanted it to cover coin-ops as well as consoles.  I had thought about changing some videos out to be MAME exclusive, but then I decided against it. Some people had requested that I leave them in since their arcades played everything anyway. Think about it... Is it wrong to have a marquee that says MAME on it and then have consoles on the machine?

Perhaps one day I may create seperate versions specific to MAME or consoles but for now...  Time is limited.

A widescreen version was also requested. We'll see.

Perhaps donations will inspire me to make more adjustments!  ;).

I can't quite get it to work through Maximus. When I start up, the audio plays, but no video. If I go into Maximus's preferences, then escape, the video plays. I can only get the video to play if I go into the preferences menu, then exit. Upon initial start up, only the audio plays. Any advice?

Nice intro  :applaud:

If you re-render for some reason, I'd love to see "Brought to you by" fade in at bottom center, followed by the DeLuSioNal box on bottom left and Retroware on bottom right, then a fadeout of 'brought to you by" (but leave the two logos). That would give the same 'credit' without the box stack, which gets a little obtrusive. Also, the fadeout of 'brought to you by' would address the unintended association between the large MAME logo and the 'bylines' at the end of the video.

You're probably missing a codec... The CCCP: Combined Community Codec Pack is probably the best you can get your hands on.

Thanks. However, the video DOES play in Windows, but only sporadically in Maximus. I'll give the codec a try. Thanks. EDIT: Ok, I got it to work upon start up every time now, but I had to upgrade to Maximus 2.10. I was running 2.08. It works every time now.

I agree with the quote above, the "brought to you by" currently can be a bit distracting and takes away from the general "look" of the video, maybe a fade in and fade out may be a better effect for the "ad"... that said I have been waiting for this vid for a while and other than that criticisizm it looks phenominal.  It will be on my cab.  Job well done!

Thanks for releasing it!

At this time, no.  Due to legal reasons it needs to have it in the video somewhere.  However, I may take the suggestions to make it less obtrusive somehow, but that may take some time, since free time is hard to come by lately).  But I'll see if I can work some magic...

Keep us posted!  Thanks again.  Hopefully the less obtrusive ad version won't be too much extra work on you.  I think everyone agrees this is the best intro vid out there, just sad to see such a large portion of it covered up for the entire length of the vid.

Once again though, job well done.

For this reason I am using D's other intro that he created to match the Maximus Arcade FE (lightning background).  It rocks as well!

Yes, I just updated the link.  Seems like link I supplied only works for mobile devices.

This is the version that I think is going to stick.  I'll talk to Saint about hosting the new version.

I like it, definitely.  Nice way of incorporating that RW logo without using the watermark.  I understand it being unavoidable; this is an improvement in my opinion.

However, I could see where some people might prefer the one with the watermark over this.  Any chance of keeping them both available?  I mean, unless I'm wrong about that, and no one likes the original better...

If you ask me, it's too long.  It should be faster and snappier, like the 'intro graphic' on a cable news channel when they're all "CIVIL WAR IN BELGISTAN: DAY 5"  Like 4 seconds but packed with awesomeness, then go to the full text logo.

Yeah, I understand about the hosting thing.  It is very generous of him to host files like that here; thanks for that, Saint!

If people seemed to generally not like the first one, then so be it.  I personally would have been happy with it, but I do like the second one better.  I, for one, definitely appreciate your efforts!

I see your point, but I think it depends on where you use it.  If you're using it during boot-up or something, then yes, I can understand wanting a shorter video.  But I've seen lots of other short vids out there, including DeLuSioNal's own "lightning" intro for Maximus Arcade, which is also a very cool vid.  I think it's nice to have something longer, with a little more substance, to throw in with a set of videos to run during "attract" mode or similar.

My only complaint was mentioned for the first vid too... and is still the reason I couldn't ever use the vid personally... the Super Nintendo Punch Out.  My cab is MAME/Daphne only... but such is life.  It looks great though.

Hi D -

Don't take feedback to mean that people hated the first version. I liked it a lot (actually better than v2). My suggestions were only intended to help tweak, not overhaul. Since you ended up taking your own logo out anyway, that single change in itself would have made a big difference in the first version's 'obtrusiveness'. However, I don't think you should have to leave yourself out completely.

Will Retroware TV allow their logo to be displayed semi-transparently? A stationary, semi-transparent logo would give due credit, without trying to make it part of the presentation. When it's part of the action, it looks more like an ad than an intro.

Don't forget yourself, and keep in mind that you're doing this for fun, not to please all of us. (that would be nearly impossible!)
