Playing Paperboy with joystick and buttons
« on: May 27, 2009, 04:08:40 pm »
I have seen the game Paperboy listed on some of the multi-game arcade machines by various vendors.  All of these machines only have basic controls, mostly joystick and buttons.

Is there a special version of Paperboy for playing with just a joystick and buttons or is there a special way to configure the input controls?

nope

Well that seems improbable since it is on so many machines.

There are so few arcade licenses available; if the license is available to a vendor they will use it and leave controls up to you to figure out.

MAME is designed to map the controls so you get basic controls. It's like the driving games. You can use your joystick to turn left and right, but is it anywhere as enjoyable, accurate or even adequate enough rather than a steering wheel?   Just because some guy advertises a MAME with paperboy on it, doesn't mean it's going to play very well using the controls provided.

It might work well with a U360 though.

Not improbable at all. Paperboy uses analog input, not digital. That is an important aspect of the game play. I'm sure it would suck to play paperboy with an 8 way.

Perhaps it's on so many machines because it's easy to throw it on there and it helps sell them since so many people love paperboy.

I've gotten Paperboy and Spy Hunter to work pretty well with the U360 on analog, using the Y axis as accelerator and X axis as steering both have the analog sensitivity set all the way down to 1

It's not as good as the actual controls, obviusly, but I've been able to get pretty far after the learrning curve of the new controls, to the point where there fun and not frustrating to play

hope that helps

don't think it would work without an analog stick

Well I do have U360's on my control panel so I will play around with it and try Bender's suggestion.

RayB - I know it won't be as good as having a actual Paperboy control panel, but just being able to play around with it will be fine.  I am not looking for perfection, just the ability to play.
