guncon 2, quick question
« on: April 09, 2009, 08:11:59 pm »
hey guys..i am really wanting a gun cabinet.  i thought about using a playstation 2 and a TV, which i may still end up doing..however i see that there are alot of gun games in mame.   i have read through a few threads but just cannot seem to find teh info i need.

i want to end up with a gun cabinet with 2 player functionality.  i currently have two guncon 2 guns for my ps2.  if i have a video card with composite output, and run that to a TV..can i use two guncon 2 guns with mame in this manner without too much hassle?  i downloaded the wingun software, and i have the parts to piece together a suitable PC...will this work?  i saw people got it working with PC monitors using some kind of home made circuit, which is above and beyond what i want to do.  i know andy at ultimarc hinted that he is workign on some kind of light gun solution, but it could be a while untill that amounts to anything and i dont really want to wait.

has anyone done this?

You're signal will suck being done over composite but otherwise, it'll work barring any of the standard driver issues that some have encountered.

The guncon works on the PS2's YPbPr component vide, if you connect the Guncon's composite passthough the green component jack (Luma) and voila.

I'd suggest you look into a graphics card that ATLEAST can putout YPbPr 480i.  A lot infact can but the output cable is often mail order from the OEM.

I'm just saying, if you're going to ALL the effort to build a cab, at least get a better tube.  You could probably get a used 27" with component for $200 if that.

well, i wasn't necessarilyl building a cabinet...i planned on getting an existing cabinet for cheap and installing the components i already have. (26" tv, and either a PC or ps2)  i figured i could put one together for very little money...otherwise i just can't do it right now.  My wife approval rating is hovering around 0 right now...she really doesn't want me to get another cabinet...i'm trying to convince her that it would cost very little money, and since the i plan on using the TV that is already in that room on a little stand..that it won't take up much more space, and my son can still use it to watch TV on during the day.  there is a local operator who has sold me empty cabinets in the past for around $20.. i already have a PC that is usable (athlon xp 2500+, 1gb ram, 80gb hd, geforce 4 mx440), as well as a spare playstation 2, 2 guncon 2 controllers, and even a 2 player x-arcade unit that i could use as well.  all i would have into it is the basically the cost of the empty cabinet and a few odds and ends.  i used that TV with the PS2 in a cabinet a few years ago, but got rid of the cabinet when we moved...yeah, the picture quality isn't great..but it is ok for shooting some bad guys.

if andy or someone else comes out with a good lightgun option for LCD monitors, then i'll eventually get that and use it with my regular mame cabinet, but for now i'd love to get some light gun action going.

I recently bought EMS Top Gun 2, it works on PS2, PS3, PC (Mame), Xbox, and is compatible with all Guncon 1/2 games.  It's worth checking out, especially if you plan to use an LCD monitor.  It's semi-easy to install, but the only problem is that you need to run a 32-bit system which kinda sucks, but if you are playing old school arcade games 32-bit doesn't matter much.  Not saying its the best option, it's just the only option  :P

i've thought about these many times...although i never really looked into them a whole lot.  i thought that they were much more expensive than that.  do you know if you get get two of them working at the same time in mame?  i'm running xp 32bit on my cabinet, because it is a p4 3.0ghz and is not 64bit compatible.  that would also be nice to use with my ps2/xbox games on my DLP projector...although it looks like i would need to buy the special blaze light bars because my screen is way bigger than 52".  i wonder if it would even work on my 102" screen?

i play house of the dead 2 and 3 on the Wii on this, but the aiming sucks, bigtime.  i dont know if it would be closer on a smaller screen, but at over 100", i can't use gun sites at all, with the wii sensor bar below the screen, i have to aim the gun close to the center of the screen to get the crosshairs to go clear to the top...

since the topgun uses similar technology...will it have these same problems?
