Console List - Release Dates & Region Info
« on: April 09, 2009, 01:05:40 pm »
Hey guys I have been working on making a CONSOLE/HANDHELD lists as a side project. I am trying to catalog as many known video game consoles as possible. I am forgoing anything that would be classified as a home computer though. (Because I see those mixed in with many video game consoles on Emulator sites)

For dates I have tried to stick with primarily US release dates unless the system was only available in Japan in which case I went with the Japanese release date. I have also gone with US console names (i.e. Nintendo vs. Famicon) to try and gear the list towards what we had access to growing up.

I just wanted to share this because it might be useful for some. Also if you can contribute the names of any systems I have missed, or release dates (with citations) to pin down some of the missing dates that would be great!  :applaud:

XX/XX/1976 - Magnavox Odyssey 300

Found here with many other early pong style consoles:
 http://www.pong-story.com/odyssey_other.htm

I only paid attention to that one because I just picked one up at a garage sale for a buck. Needed some quick info.

I would argue against going strictly with U.S. names and dates. You're inconsistent in how you create the list. For example, you cite you track systems even if they were only available in Japan/ You also note Genesis/Megadrive and TG16/PC-E. So why not track other system Japanese (and European) counterparts and release dates?

1991(?) CD-i

I am forgoing anything that would be classified as a home computer though.
How strict is this? Generally speaking, the Atari XEGS (1987) would probably considered a sort of hybrid. Strictly speaking, the XEGS lacked a number of features of it's brethren and was really a repackaged 65XE. Most sites seem to consider the XEGS a game machine and something less of a full blown home computer. Though not functionally identical, the XEGS probably filled a similar role as the PS2 and PS3 (Linux).

I note you lack all the current handhelds and consoles such as the PS3, Wii and 360. Is that just an oversight?

There is a collection of production "DIY" game consoles such as Hydra, XGameStation (XGS), Fuzebox.

Then there is a collection of those nutty kiddie consoles, I think V-Smile is one such name, Sega Pico is another.

There are so many consoles out there it would be pretty hard to  get an "all in one" list.  Besides the known consoles a lot of the older ones were produced as store brands. For example Sears had their own Atari 2600, and every one had a pong clone they sold.

Here is a semi complete list I had stashed away (found on a website long ago, saved the list not the link)

Some of them were rolled out regionally and don't have a "US" release date.  The Saturn, for example, was rolled out to a couple specific chains (IIRC, Babbages, Software Etc, EB, and one other) a month ahead of its scheduled release date.  No announcement was made, they just struck a deal with those chains and let them put it out early.  I remember that very clearly as I ended up blowing the $400 on one because it also came with extra games as part of the deal.  I ended up with Worldwide Soccer and 2 other games I can't remember that way.

And f.i. the Odyssey 2 was released here as Philips G7000 Videopac in 1978. In France it was called Radiola Jet 25.

Also don't forget the Philips G7200 (also Schneider 7200 and Radiola Jet 27, which was a G7000 with a built-in b/w monitor:
http://www.videopac.org/G7200/

This was apparently never released outside Europe, just like the G7400 (1983) that was the "upgraded" version of the G7000/Odyssey2 and would have been the Odyssey 3 but was apparently never released in the US.

And this about shows how complicated a task like compiling a list like that can be :D
