I'm running Windows 2K Pro... All latest security patches from M$
Installed the support software first, got a strange error and a riched.dll file that windows is protecting... After this, installed the UT jukebox software, launched the .exe and getting this>
RuntimeError 68 Device Unavailable.
All I can do is click OK...which closes that little window.
help?
Thanks

1) Which version of the software are you running
2) Does your computer have a "C:\" drive existing?
3) Which drive did you install the software?
4) Did you install the support software under the default "C:\Program Files\UncleTs Jukebox Support Software" location?
5) My support software tries to install the "C:\Windows\system32\riched32.dll" and possibly there is some conflict when you already have a "C:\Windows\system32\riched.dll" file. I have never tested the software myself on WIN2k Pro

Yeah, must be a Win2K Pro thing or possibly you just have a bunch of "protections" set whcih does not let programs install themselves fully. I dont know what could be causing it. Trying it on WinXP should work fine since many people use it on WinXP (including me). Of course trying a new jukebox software package would be an option as well.

Googling around quickly it seems an error 68 can be caused by the drive not being completely ready:
Error 68: The selected drive is not available at the moment
1) Could it be possible the drive your music library resides on is not completely ready by the time my Jukebox program is being loaded?
2) Perhaps you are trying to load my jukebox software automatically when Windows boots up instead of double-clicking on my jukebox icon once your system is completely loaded?
3) Does the program crash after this Error 68 is displayed?
4) At what point is the Error 68 displayed? Were you able to load the music libraries or get into the Options menu or does it crash when the program is being loaded up?
5) Did you install the "Support Software" prior to running the jukebox app?
I will keep searching around for ideas ......

Hi 1. the machine I'm testing it on is on 24/4. C: is the main drive 2. Just runnung the exe manually 3. The program never starts - I just get the Error 68 window, press ok and it goes but nothing happens 4. Error 68 occurs the moment I run the exe 5. Yes several times- uninstalled, renamed existing files to ensure a clean load

Not sure I have too many earlier versions ...... I need to look at the code. I am assuming that installing the support software did not go nicely for some reason and that is why the application is failing before anything is even displayed.
My support software installs some DLLs and OCX files into the Windows/System32 directory. I am wondering whether you have write access to this directory. When you first install the operating system, this directory is hidden, so I am unsure.
1) Please do the following:
- Open Start/Programs/Accessories/Windows Explorer application - Expand the "Local Disk C:" drive - Expand the "Windows" directory - Click on the yellow folder icon next to the System32 directory
Do you get an message saying the contents of this directory are hidden because they are important system files ...... or something like that OR do are all the files listed within the system32 directory for you to see?
2) If you can see all the files in the C:\Windows\System32 directory, then please confirm whether all of these files exist in the directory for me:
asycfilt.dll comcat.dll LaVolpe3Button.ocx MSCOMCTL.OCX oleaut32.dll olepro32.dll riched32.dll RICHTX32.OCX ScrCap.dll stdole2.tlb vcSLIDERCTL.ocx

I have a debug EXE for you to try (see attached). Simply unzip the file into the Unclet's install directory (C:\Program Files\Unclets Jukebox) and then run the "UncleT's Jukebox Debug.exe" file
After you get the Error 68, please see if the file in "C:\uncletLogFile.txt" exists. If it does then please send it to me and I will look through it to see where the program crashes. If the file does not exist, then this means my application never started at all and will require more thinking/research on my part.
Thanks for helping debug.

Thanks for testing this out ...... I will ask around to try to get some answers. I would think something went wrong with the installation of the support software (ie: installing DLL and OCX files required by my application) and thus my application can not start because loading all the required DLL and OCX files is not going successfully.
Can you check if you have the following files in your "C:\Windows\Font" folder for me?
Andy Bold (true type) Cupertino (true type)
Here is the main description of Error 68:
"Error 68 (Device unavailable) - You tried to OPEN a device or ATTACH to a device or graphic without that device present or installed. For example, opening COM1 on a system without a serial adapter or modem, or attempting to use TCP/IP or UDP/IP on a machine without Winsock 2.0 (or better) installed. Also, trying to attach to a graphic or printer that is not available will cause this error."
This is why I am thinking some of the DLL and OCX files are not being read in correctly for some reason.
Sorry this is causing you grief .....

1) Can you open Windows Media Player and tell me which version you have installed. Perhaps it is an older version (or newer version) which does not work well with my software.
2) Please see if these additional files exist in the "C:\Windows\System32" directory:
expsrv.dll MSJET35.DLL MSJINT35.DLL MSJTER35.DLL MSRD2X35.DLL MSREPL35.DLL MSVCRT40.DLL RICHED32.DLL VBAJET32.DLL VB5DB.DLL wmp.dll
3) Can you go into "My Computer/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs" and see if the following programs are in the list it brings up (after everything loads):
"Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1" "Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0"

Excellent news ! I am confused about your " .net sp1" statement ..... did you mean " winxp sp1" instead? Basically, are you saying that you had WinXP(SP1) installed previously and you upgraded to WinXP(SP3) now? Also, I wanted to thank you for spending your time resolving this problem. If you have any questions about the software then please let me know.

I wonder if you ever uninstalled some programs from your computer and had the uninstaller remove unused DLL or OCX files which it thought were no longer used.
Anyway, the only thing I can think of is that my program has some dependencies on other DLL or OCX files which your computer does not have and which I can not determine right now. Basically, if I include a DLL file with my application which relies on a couple of other DLL files being present on the computer which in turn relies on even more DLL files being present then it sometimes gets out of hand trying to maintain all dependencies.
Now perhaps I am missing a dependent file in my install support software but users do not notice the problem because the same required dependency might have been loaded as a result of installing other applications (ie: Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, etc..)
It seems "shags0024" installed WinXP(sp3) and then installed my software and it worked fine. I am not sure whether he installed other software applications before installing my software and testing. It would be nice to know whether a clean install of WinXP(sp3) followed by only installing my software results in my software working. If so, then something must be missing from your WinXP(sp3) install perhaps.
I looked at my installed programs and I noticed I have "Microsoft .NET 1.1" installed as well as "Microsoft .NET 2.0" at the same time. I also have Microsoft Office installed as well. I am not sure whether installing these programs result in certain missing file dependencies being reinstalled which might help. This is just a wild guess by me.
I will keep thinking about this but I am not sure where to go from here right now .....
EDIT: Do you have any anti-virus software or spyware detection installed on your PC? If so, perhaps try turning it completely off, reinstalling my support software and then retrying the jukebox application. Just another wild stab in the dark I am afraid but perhaps some other monitoring program is stopping the jukebox EXE file from loading/running for some reason.

Unc, Just for informational purposes: I had just installed a fresh copy of Windows XP, then installed service pack. i have ZoneAlarm and Symantec AntiVirus Corporate v10.1 i installed GameEx then your support software. then your Jukebox. these are the steps i took to the best of my recollection.
i do have Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 (no servicepack)
"Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 provides cumulative roll-up updates for customer reported issues found after the release of Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0."
i hope this helps out.

Thanks shags ...... this would seem to indicate even more to me that something went missing/corrupted on swamprat's computer causing my application not to be excuted properly. swamprat: If you do not currently use any spyware detection software (SpyBot, Super Anti-spyware, etc...) perhaps you can download one of those free spyware application and run it on your computer to see if anything is found. Possibly when stuff gets fixed up then my software will work? I am still grasping at straws here ......

I also guess the support files did not got installed correctly or the download corrupted, due the antivirus might prevent that, because it could not install runtime files to the system folder? Try disable these, install the support files and enable again and see what happens.
A similar conflict have I seen with AHK compiler and AVG (which I do still use even with this problem) which prevent the exe file to been build-ed, so it can been a conflict with the antivirus software too.
Did you remember to install the graphics driver which sometimes might been needed to get it to work (MultiFE example cant like the default MS drivers for some graphics cards, it simply just crash under paint()).
Here with Vista (but with UAC disabled) it does run fine.

I attached a sample test project to see if this works on your computer.
Please unZip and simply run the EXE file. It does nothing other than display a window with some controls (which I use in my jukebox application) on it. Just let me know whether the window pops up or whether you get an error.
I am trying to test whether the controls I use can be loaded on your system without problems occuring.

I think the log file could not write to the drive, but the software do not check if it was open or not and tried to write to the file which is not open and then crash. Somewhere a permission problem. Hence no log files did created.
Other problem could been the soundcard and/or graphics driver? Did you remember to update them?

Yes, it could be a permission problem perhaps. My test application I provided does not check for the same files when loading in which my jukebox would use. Perhaps I should write a new test app later which looks for these same files and see if it works I would need to do this when I get home from work tonight though.
Also, can you please tell me the following:
1) How many folders do you have in the "C:\Program Files\UncleTs Jukebox\" folder?
2) What are the name of the files in the "C:\Program Files\UncleTs Jukebox\data\" folder?
3) How many files do you have in the following folders?
C:\Program Files\UncleTs Jukebox\icons\scrollbar C:\Program Files\UncleTs Jukebox\icons\sliders C:\Program Files\UncleTs Jukebox\images\default C:\Program Files\UncleTs Jukebox\sounds

If no subfolders have been found, Uncle'T Jukebox ask to reinstall the software, but it can came with many of these messages before it quit (which I do excepted it would do that).
What happens if you try to run it in adminstrator mode?

WE are getting somewhere OK Unclet first
1. 8 Folders 2. featlist.txt,help.txthistory.txt,pugevent.txt and tips.txt 3. No folder called scrollbar! or sliders or default!! Sounds has 5 wav files in it
I think we've found the problem. I've reinstalled making sure the use folders option was ticked in Winzip and same result- missing directories
Yes both video and sound card drivers current working and up to date. No change in Administrator

OK, I like progress ...... and I really like that you are willing to help resolve this issue .... Now, click on the folder structure image attached so it will get bigger so you can see the contents. This is the folder structure you should have after you UnZip my Jukebox application v3.19 from my site. In my application the "icons", "images" and "skins" folders only have subfolders inside of them and no files. The "logs", "playlsts" and "plugins" folders are empty folders (ie: no subfolders and no files). The "data" and "sounds" folders only have files in them. 1) Since you told me you have 8 folders in the install directory then I am assuming you have the main 8 folders (data, icons, images, logs, playlsts, plugins, skins, sounds). Is this correct? 2) Do you have any subfolders located within the "skins" folder ... or is it empty? If it is NOT empty then please tell me which subfolders you have and tell me which subfolders have files located in them.

OK I did not see the subfolders but my directory tree is the same as your tree - subfloders are there.
1. yes all 8 main folders are present 2. There are subfolders under skins
Albums Menu with BlackandBlue.fnt, Blackandblue.jpg and Blackandblue .skn -/images with a stack of icons gifs and jpgs Media Menu - /BlackandBlue BlackandBlue.fnt, Blackandblue.jpg and Blackandblue .skn -/images with a stack of icons gifs and jpgs -/Default Default.fnt Default.jpg and default.skn -/images with a stack of icons gifs and jpgs
Sorry I did not think to look at sub-floders- may have led you astray

OK just tried a clean install
1. Removed the support software through uninstall at the control panel 2. Deleted the program directory 3. reinstalled the support software 4. Installed the program to the root drive (c:\unclet) - all folders present and ok
Same issue still

OK I did not see the subfolders but my directory tree is the same as your tree - subfolders are there. I am confused ..... are you saying your directory tree looks exactly like mine now .... or are these subfolders still missing like you indicated previously? \icons\scrollbar\ \icons\sliders\ \images\default\ 1. yes all 8 main folders are present good 2. There are subfolders under skins
Albums Menu with BlackandBlue.fnt, Blackandblue.jpg and Blackandblue .skn -/images with a stack of icons gifs and jpgs The "Albums Menu" subfolder should have the same structure as the "Media Menu" subfolder you listed (see below). Are you sure the "Albums Menu" folder has 3 files in it or are there subfolders called "BlackandBlue" and "Default" under the "Albums Menu" folder"? Media Menu - /BlackandBlue BlackandBlue.fnt, Blackandblue.jpg and Blackandblue .skn -/images with a stack of icons gifs and jpgs -/Default Default.fnt Default.jpg and default.skn -/images with a stack of icons gifs and jpgs This is what I would expect to see ...... The "Albums Menu" folder should have similar folders and files.

Sorry I meant that my tree is the same as yours. I did not relsise that the two folders I though were "missing" were subdirectories
Yes I have the correct directory structure for the skins folder and the correct files
