How To Video: Wiring a Control Panel for Beginners
« on: March 04, 2008, 02:35:56 pm »
Here's a video that I put together on the basics of wiring a control panel (for beginners).

I don't go in depth about crimping or soldering.  Also, I used micro switches on my buttons.

I apologize for the quality of the video in advance, as I had to compress it to be acceptable for Youtube.

Enjoy!

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Didn't learn anything myself, but I'm sure this will help out plenty of people just getting started.

Great video. Good work.

Is this the same for a console controller?

Excelent video.  :applaud: :applaud: :applaud: :applaud: :applaud: :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

You will need to solder wires to the controller pad.  Depending on the type of controller you can daisy chain the ground.  Some of the newer controllers you can't because each button has it's own separate ground.  Microsoft XBox 360 pads are the worst in this area.  Also you can't replace the thumb sticks on the controller with a standard digital joystick.  The thumb sticks are analog so you can do the fine targeting required.

Tones of information at this link about hacking controllers (aka game pads).

Hmmm, that's something I can work on with a buddy of mine who is a Dreamcast guru.  I'm associated with RetrowareTV.com and we could always shoot something like that.  I'll ask him to see what he thinks.

On the other hand, I had always wanted to make an Xbox Mod that will interface with an ipac for a Bartop arcade.  The reason being is that Xboxes are dirt cheap now (original Xboxes) and it would cost next to nothing to softmod it to play MAME.

Here is a pic of a dreamcast controller with solder points marked.  As long as you scrape off the black stuff down to copper you have a good place to solder your wire.  This is a single ground pad so you can daisy chain the ground connections on your buttons and joystick.  Also this is a digital pad instead of an analog stick so it maps directly to a standard joystick.
