  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

MAME filters.....screen burn filter?
« on: February 28, 2008, 02:36:40 pm »
I know it's ridiculous, but sometimes, I want to mimic things so much that I even want the bad things emulated.

Are there any filters for MAME that make it look like a burned in monitor?

Most of us are familiar with a good case of "Pac" burn. Sometimes I want that sense of realism.

Anything out there like that?

It's nothing I'd want on all the time, but think it would be interesting to have.

That would be spectacular, especially for people who convert classics into MAME cabs.  :laugh2:

Quite easy to do using bezels! Here I created one for PacMan that demonstrates how to do it. It's just an "alpha faded" (10% Alpha) screenshot of PacMan with the black background removed and overlayed as a bezel. If you go into Video Options you can turn the burn in on or off. Place the file in your Mame's artwork folder.

I can't believe I didn't think of that.
Thanks for the files. I just tried it and it's a good approximation.

Headkaze,

That's really cool. I've been playing around with your "sample" (not for burn in but for another idea) and I have one question: how do you make the bezel available to all games?

Maybe it would be helpful to say that a bezel around the game isn't what I'm after. It's just the burn in part of what you did. Not sure if that would make a difference in the answer to my question or not. I see the effects like scanlines that are in the artwork folder, but those seem to work differently than bezels, because if I apply the burn in png as an effect, it doesn't do the same thing.

You would have to make a bezel for each game or write a program to automate the process.

Attached is the pacman burn in bezel without the bezel around the edge. Just make the coordinates the size of the overlay image.

That's because the effects like scanlines, aperture mask, etc. are REALLY tiny images that are repeated over and over and over again over the entire visible screen area.  Therefore, trying that out with the burn-in just won't work.  As headkaze stated, you'll need to make one up for each of the games that you run.
