Eh, that's an average console collection... mine is easily bigger than that and there are a couple guys here that have or have had collections much bigger than mine.

As always your perception is a little skewed. That is certainly an above average collection. Its not the largest by any means, but its far above what a normal person has. I have more then a normal person; so even my collection, that pales in comparison to that one, is above average.

A normal console owner is not a collector.  A collector is someone who actively seeks games they'll never play just to own them.  Go to a place like digitpress.com where this would be an average at best collection if you need examples.  Atariage would bear out the same thing.

Most of it is boxed up now because I'm working on the basement, sadly.  There are folks here who have seen parts or all of it IRL.  I've sent a few BYOAC people console stuff for free, or sold good stuff to them cheap... hell I just gave the Cub Scouts two boxed Odyssey2s and 3 Genesis.  You just can't play them all and after a while it's more about storage than it is about what you are actually storing.

You should have seen ClubNinja's console collection before he got into arcade games.  It was world class.

My basement is too full of crap... to the point I built a shed rather than fix the problem.   :banghead:  Then put two vid and two pin projects in the shed.   :banghead:  I've been Freecycling and giving crap away at a fast clip lately and still it's too much crap to easily work on the basement walls.

My kids have the whole second floor of the house for their two bedrooms... that's almost a full half the finished space the house has.  They're good.  It's perfect for them because the ceilings are slanted on two sides making it a much more effective space for kids than adults.

When we first build that shed (it is vinyl sided to match the house) we told the kids we were going to move their rooms out there.  I expected them to protest but instead the 5 year old started packing up his stuffed animals and the 8 year old wanted to know how we were going to get electricity out there for his alarm clock and computer.   :laugh2:  They were all about it.

"collector" was never specified, though the point is moot. I am a collector but I collect the games to play them not for them to collect dust. thats just silly. I think my point was there are 10 "collectors" with tiny collections for every 1 that has a huge one, which severely reduces what is average.

I think me having 4 arcade machines is excess, so what do I know

I can do that.  I have some of it in plastic drawers.  I'll get it this weekend.

EDIT:  hrm, maybe it would be easier to snag a small vid of just opening drawers and the like... I just finally figured out how to get my video camera talking to the PC and slapped a really cheesy test vid on youtube for the first time the other day.

Kaytrim... one of the things I don't have a ton of is Sony games.  I'm not a big Playstation fan.  I think at the moment I have two PS1s, a PSOne, and a fat PS2, but not many games.  Had another PS1 I sent to a BYOAC guy as a thank you.

Just take a few pics of the 50 or so boxes it would take to hold a collection that is easily bigger than the one in the auction. It will make a great point of reference for the average owner vs. true collector debate.

Just imagine all the fundage you'd have to finish all of your arcade projects if you sold off your collection like the ebay guy.

That collection wouldn't need anything like 50 boxes.  You could do that in 20 good plastic bins, I'd think, unless those shelves are somehow part of the collection.

Dude, if someone offered me $9100 for my collection, I'd sell it, deliver it, hook it all up, and throw in a very inappropriate lapdance when I was done.

I'm poking through the itemization now... he's selling old used stuff at high book price estimates... most of that stuff hasn't been worth anything like he says for quite a while now.  Console values aren't what they used to be.

His Aquarius stuff is pretty sweet... I don't have any of that, though I did just give away a whole Adam setup, two Atari 400s, an 800, and three bins of TI99 stuff including a NIB TI994/A.  I can't match his stuff there now... but looking at his TG16 stuff I can shove his under the rug as I'm one of the only people I know with complete boxed TG16, TurboDuo, and TurboExpress.   :)

His collection is definitely bigger than I could see from the pics, so I'll back off on that.  He has an impressive collection here.  It's roughly the same size as mine was before I started selling off the more obscure stuff and giving away nice stuff that was either of no monetary value or too big to ship.  I'll snag some pics of some of my stuff this weekend anyway just for giggles.

It wasn't over the summer.  I was selling off $20 lockout modded new connector NES units and they weren't moving on ebay, locally, or in BST here.  I had to throw in 3 games each to get them moving and still people were hemming and hawing on it.  Considering the time it takes to do the mod and the $7 cost of each new connector, that sucked.

Wait... that $9100 is not including $1500 shipping?   :dizzy:

Maybe I should set it all up and put it on ebay.  My problem is that I'm super anal about selling flaky stuff.  I have to test the crap out of something before I sell it... that would take me forever.

I'm guessing his wife is making him get rid of that.

To get most of my collection away from the 7 year old, I built shelves and stored them all near the ceiling. I got those one cubic "foot" office boxes for free so I try to fit everything as efficiently as possible in them. Once I got them out of reach, a weird thing happened, they disappeared from my GF's radar... either that or she just holds her tongue now.

Storing the arcade cabinets are the real pain.

Chadtower, are you refining your existing collection or are you actually trying to reduce the volume of your collection?

Chadtower, are you refining your existing collection or are you actually trying to reduce the volume of your collection?

Mostly reducing the volume.  There isn't a ton of space around and I used to collect every system I could get except Sony... and for those I still collected hardware.  There was a lot of good stuff but I never used any of it.  Not too long ago I sold my LaserActive w/sega and 4 complete TG16 modules.  I still have the goggles, though, as those are heavy duty and do work on other platforms that use shutter glasses.  I was a very active console collector until I got into arcade stuff around 2004 and still come across cheap/free console stuff on a regular basis.  It takes willpower to turn it down, man... willpower.

A couple years ago I was at a Blockbuster and the manager was taking all of the N64 boxes off the shelf.  Told me he was taking them out back to shrinkwrap with the games for sale... for $5 each.  They had just about every good game for the system, some 2 copies, as well as all of the rare ones.  I ended up buying 70 complete N64 games that day and made the cash back selling the dups of the ones I already had.  Still have probably half of the N64 library complete... there are probably 3 or 4 systems I could say that about even now.

EDIT:  example... this was just in the last hour.  Once you get into the methods, the stuff just falls into your lap.

Cool, nice job.  Bet there is an even bigger pile of beaten to piss controllers and dead systems that he bought 5 years ago as "working" but never actually tested at the time.

Would you consider offering some of these consoles (ie genesis or a snes) to some of the byoacers (like sithmaster)?  I cant find one that doesnt go over 50 dollars on ebay and no one near me (that i can find) has one that they will part with.

Have you tried Freecycle?  Genesis systems show up on Freecycle fairly regularly.  Last year I was finding them at yard sales 3 a week - as soon as Gamestop stopped buying them back people decided to sell them off for practically nothing.

Put up a wanted for them on Craigslist as well.  There are literally millions of Genesis sitting around unused.

Now, the SNES, that one seems to be harder to get.  Never did find a ton of those and the SNES2 is one of the only systems I've never found in the wild.

I kinda want to avoid craigslist if possible (mostly cause of idiots, mostly) but ill put something on freecycle.  (just posted on my group) It doesnt help when everyone thinks they are worth over 50 or 60 dollars.

Im sure im not going to get lucky with a yard sale as most people just have really cool action figures and all the video game stuff goes in a flash.

It does go fast, that's why you should be there at the posted starting time.

I'll put it this way... if you're looking for old console stuff and you can't find a Genesis you're going about it all wrong.  The Genesis is by far the easiest system to find and the one with the lowest monetary value.

Aw, shucks  :D

I don't miss any of it.  I still have about 500+ different Genesis carts, though.  I could probably get rid of all but 10 +/- 5 of those and still be happy.

It does go fast, that's why you should be there at the posted starting time.

I'll put it this way... if you're looking for old console stuff and you can't find a Genesis you're going about it all wrong.  The Genesis is by far the easiest system to find and the one with the lowest monetary value.

Well ive only gone twice to group yardsales and once to a single one.  the single one had just the toys and the other two were much better.  one was a town wide one and i found someone selling a bust a move for 200 dollars that i didnt get and someone else had a dreamcast for about 15 bucks (already had one though for a dc based cab i should have gotten it).  the third was just a newspaper ad that had a bunch of sales listed on the same day kinda of all over the place and none of them gave a good list of what they had for sale.  i did get to one of them early but like i said either they didnt have what i wanted or it was gone before then.  i havent seen a sale in a while though so maybe i can check a electronic repair shop that ive seen an nes in the window (maybe they have more then that)

im going to redouble my efforts.

I'd say you haven't even started yet based on that description.

Get the Friday paper.  Look at the Yard Sale ads.  Map a course for saturday morning, taking into account starting time for each sale and the best physical route to take.  If you do it right you can hit 20 yard sales by 10:30am.

If you do that twice and don't find a Genesis I'll be shocked.

Would you consider offering some of these consoles (ie genesis or a snes) to some of the byoacers (like sithmaster)?  I cant find one that doesnt go over 50 dollars on ebay and no one near me (that i can find) has one that they will part with.

Whaaaat?

Just one example (not mine):
Sega Genesis Complete With Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Game

Currently 4.99 with 12.99 shipping and 1 day 6 hours left.

Thats just good timing on your part.  Im sure it will go up in a bid war or something so no one from this forum should bid on it...

A properly working Rev 1 Genesis is the one to get, IMO... IIRC it's the only one you get true stereo out of (from the headphones jack).  The Genesis 3 has issues with the controller port firmware and the Genesis 2 has really flimsy a/v ports that crack their solder joints easily.

I think the problem here is that he's tried nothing and he's all out of ideas.
