I think I've come to the conclusion that DOSCab/WinCab Jukebox is possibly the worst possible name for a jukebox.
When I first wrote the jukebox, it only ran on DOS, and its sole purpose was to run on DOS-based MAME cabinets. Because it didn't run properly in Windows, I wanted a name that communicated very clearly that it was specifically for DOS cabinets; thus the name DOSCab Jukebox. A quick search showed that nothing else used that name. I didn't put a lot of thought into it because I figured it would be used by half a dozen people at most.
As it started to get popular, and as my own cabinet moved from DOS to Windows, I created a Window version, which naturally became WinCab jukebox. Of course, there is a major piece of compression software called WinCab, so now I had an issue. And of course when talking about the jukebox as a whole, it was now DOSCab/WinCab Jukebox... which doesn't quite roll off the tongue.
As I start work on version 4, and am preparing a new website, it strikes me that if I am going to change the name, now is the time. But what to change it to?
- I've taken to calling the jukebox DWJ; I've thought of just making DWJ the "official" name.
- In a similar vein, I'm also considering DWJukebox or DWJuke.
- Jukebox Construction Set is taken. Is Jukebox Construction Kit too similar?
- JukeEngine has possibilities, but it doesn't feel "approachable".
- JukeSim or SimJuke: There's a program called "Jukebox Simulator"... is this too similar?
- iJuke: "There's a lawyer from Apple on the phone and he sounds really mad..."
- Odeon Jukebox: An Odeon was a theatre for musical performances in ancient Greece. Lots of things use this name, but I know of none for jukebox software.
- NeoJuke: Amazingly, nothing uses this, although there is a Neo-Geo sound only emulator called NeoJukeBox.
- Jukebox Magic: can't think of any useful comment other than "Hey, it's a name."
- InfiniJuke: A reference to the near-unlimited skinning possibilities.
What do y'all think? Any other suggestions, or is one of these a home run?
