DOSCab/WinCab: Needs new name?
« on: September 11, 2007, 10:33:59 pm »
I think I've come to the conclusion that DOSCab/WinCab Jukebox is possibly the worst possible name for a jukebox.

When I first wrote the jukebox, it only ran on DOS, and its sole purpose was to run on DOS-based MAME cabinets.  Because it didn't run properly in Windows, I wanted a name that communicated very clearly that it was specifically for DOS cabinets; thus the name DOSCab Jukebox.  A quick search showed that nothing else used that name. I didn't put a lot of thought into it because I figured it would be used by half a dozen people at most.

As it started to get popular, and as my own cabinet moved from DOS to Windows,  I created a Window version, which naturally became WinCab jukebox.  Of course, there is a major piece of compression software called WinCab, so now I had an issue.  And of course when talking about the jukebox as a whole, it was now DOSCab/WinCab Jukebox... which doesn't quite roll off the tongue.

As I start work on version 4, and am preparing a new website, it strikes me that if I am going to change the name, now is the time.  But what to change it to?

  • I've taken to calling the jukebox DWJ; I've thought of just making DWJ the "official" name.
  • In a similar vein, I'm also considering DWJukebox or DWJuke.
  • Jukebox Construction Set is taken.  Is Jukebox Construction Kit too similar?
  • JukeEngine has possibilities, but it doesn't feel "approachable".
  • JukeSim or SimJuke: There's a program called "Jukebox Simulator"... is this too similar?
  • iJuke: "There's a lawyer from Apple on the phone and he sounds really mad..."
  • Odeon Jukebox: An Odeon was a theatre for musical performances in ancient Greece.  Lots of things use this name, but I know of none for jukebox software.
  • NeoJuke: Amazingly, nothing uses this, although there is a Neo-Geo sound only emulator called NeoJukeBox.
  • Jukebox Magic: can't think of any useful comment other than "Hey, it's a name."
  • InfiniJuke: A reference to the near-unlimited skinning possibilities.

What do y'all think?  Any other suggestions, or is one of these a home run?

Wow, looks like my vote is winning!  I won't tell you what it is, I don't want to influence anyone else's decision.

btw, WinCab was my inspiration for starting my Juke. It's still in the design / accumulating parts stage, but it will be a Winter project (in fact, listening to it right now).

Nice software, whatever you choose to call it.  :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

Freebox have also good skinning possibilities, and Barcrest for about year ago have also said about Jukebox Construction Set (not to been used this name), Like your software can.

Skinning in my own software, MultiJuke, is not made to been skinned that way and the same way move buttons away, when I designed it.

I do like DWJukebox and DWJuke names, which destription your software very well. It also good to shorting to DWJ by users (like I something like to shorting Arcade Music Box to AMB).

Just remember to register these domains before any trolls do that.

Freebox was a good name... I had thought of "Freedom Jukebox" but it was too close to Barcrest's excellent work.

You know, I hadn't even thought of looking at domain names... I guess I probably should.  I'm going to put the new site on wordpress.com rather than my personal Charter account, but I'm sure I could redirect a domain name to it.  That's why I have to make a decision on a name... once you create a WordPress blog you can't change the name.

Hey, it would been very nice change, because I have critic the name a bit in the past on his forum, because it turning to shareware soon. Freedom just sound very nice in that case and have wrote about it in his forum (and linked here as well).

And yes, some troll have registred wincab.com, but does not use it.

Well the results are pretty clear, so I'm starting to put together the new site at wordpress.com.  Feel free to peek as I'm putting it together; opinions are always welcome.

(Edit: Never mind, see next post)

Hmm... the free version of WordPress is close to what I want but not quite there, so I finally broke down and actually bought hosting.  I know, silly to pay for hosting for a free product, huh?  Anyway, look for http://www.dwjukebox.com within the next 24 hours. :)

I have doing that for years, but I do have some other domains on my webhotel as well (I have shared webhotel hosting).

PT congra with the new name, even JukeCab would sound cool as well. But otherwice, you should of course redirect
http://webpages.charter.net/celamantia/jukebox/ and change the names on this support forum as well.

If you still want to mainstram links, you should swap Arcade Music Box with MultiJuke (because AMB is discounted and replaced with MultiJuke), which exists to Linux as well Windows. Otherwice you may just link to the Jukebox Software on Wiki as well, which have the same list....

Yes, I'll change the names and do the redirects when the new site is finished and is getting picked up in Google... I may even wait until the next software release.  The website is something I never really put any time or thought into and it shows.

Officiall, I guess, the name is still really DOSCab/WinCab under the covers... sort of like how Kentucky Fried Chicken renamed all its restaurants to KFC but they never really changed the name.
