Donkey Kong...Insanely hard..and funny level order!
« on: June 20, 2007, 05:57:37 am »
Hey all.

I have been playing Crazy Kong a little and can get a whopping 46200 points

Now I've been trying Donkey Kong(US Set 1) and that is one difficult game!! How many barrels
can that monkey throw???

When I clear the first ramp level, I go directly to the rivet level, and save the chick. Then back
to the ramp level. In Crazy Kong the levels seem to come in the correct order, ie. the rivet level
being last(where Kong has nowhere to go)

In Donkey Kong the rivet level is the second one...and that seems strange!!

Any creedence to this?

US Set 1 seems right to me because thats how I remember it.

Arcade Games are all about repeating levels and the levels becoming more difficult. It would make sense they would give you an easy pass the first time around and make it more difficult to get to the end level.

Elevator Level 3 for example... I hate that level.

I have to ask....when you say Elevator Level 3, does that mean the third time you meat that level?

Thanks!

The order is like this...if I remember correctly:
Stage 1 (barrels)
Stage 4 (rivets)

Stage 1
Stage 3 (elevators)
Stage 4

Stage 1
Stage 2 (moving ladder)
Stage 1
Stage 3
Stage 4

Stage 1
Stage 2
Stage 3
Stage 1
Stage 2
Stage 3
Stage 4

I have one and play it A LOT.

Yes... hard for me. Frizzlefried (who now owns a Donkey Kong) has only beaten the level 1 time. I can't break 100k on the game.

I have beaten the gameboy Donkey Kong game, but I have always sucked at the arcade version. Maybe its the fact I can't do a triple jump with a backflip, and toss the hammer up in the air to climb a ladder... :dunno ;D

Oh man, Mario vs. Donkey Kong on the GBA is such an awesome game.

Am I the only one that thinks that the elevator stage is a lot easier than the rivet stage?

This is in the history.dat you know. As well, you'll notice that the japanese version has them in linear order from the beginning.

Elevator Level 3 for example... I hate that level.

I haven't gotten that far, but I think elevator is the easiest screen...unless you get a break on the pie level with the beasties.

In the arcades I could regularly get 85-100k on DK. Now I do good to get 15k...LOL! I guess the reflexes are suffering with age. The trick to the elevator stage (in later levels) is all in the timing. Though I can't remember when to "go", you will notice that the springs do not have the same landing points or jumping heights...therein lies the key.

They setup the levels in the US version to give the player an early payoff early in the game.  So the game starts out with two levels, you win!  Then three levels, you win!  Then it gets hard.

BTW, there's a movie about Donkey Kong coming out: The King of Kong:  A Fistful of Quarters...check out the trailer

Personally I like the Japanese level order better. The levels progress in a more natural order without repeating.

I can't find any mention of it on KLOV or within history.dat, but DK Junior also does this with the levels.

US Version
Vines
Keys
Vines
etc

Japanese Version
Vines
Moving platforms/Ropes
Sparks (I think)
Keys
etc.
Brevity is not my strong suit.

Yeah, I didn't even know there was a fourth screen till just recently. I think it's a neat bonus, sorta like an easter egg for getting that far. What makes it cuter is the little interlude before it.

The correct level progress is:

Level 1
---------
1 (girder)
4 (peg stage)

Level 2
---------
1
3 (elevator)
4

Level 3
---------
1
2 (cement factory / pie factory)
3
4

Level 4
---------
1
2
1
2
3
4

Not sure where it goes after that one cuz Level 4 elevator's are a ---smurfette--- (which is actually the 3rd time you see that screen).  I've passed it not once,  but twice,  and promptly died on the bloomin' peg stage afterwards both times.

PS: If you don't like this order,  the JAPANESE version goes 1234 as does Crazy Kong.

Crazy Kong is a licensed version of DK,  but OBVIOUSLY an earlier version of it or something...and it is MUCH MUCH easier than DK.

Plus the sounds are about as laughable as you can get.

To get there is an accomplishment though. DK is a hard game! US set 1 is where it is at though, that is how I remember it from when I was 6-7 years old at Park Arcade.

Didn't get to play a whole lot back then to get really good. Trying to get my cab complete so that I can get good. My cab is in the house and at playing condition now. I finally just made it to that 3rd elevator stage on my last guy and died from the flying springy thingers...They go fast!
