I want to start looking for a gun game.  Not a mounted gun game, but one of those games with the guns attached by a cable.

A two player shooting game would be better when I have a group over, but if those are going to be expensive I'd get a one player shooting, or hunting game.

I don't have any game in mind,  I just want to know if the prices of this type of game is even acceptable.

I also want an air hockey table.

Please post estimate prices for decent games of this type, in working condition.

Thanks

You should be able to get an Area51 or equivalent gun game for $400 or less.
An air hockey should be $1000 or less, but I don't have any personal experience with them.

Area 51 suck-diddly-ucks, though.  I'd stay away from those FMV gun games unless you can get them way cheaper than that.

I picked up a Lethel Enforcers and Lethal Enforcers II (better IMO) for $150 each.

Getting a model 2 boardset, then putting HOTD 2 in it, is a good way to go.

Hell, you could put a dreamcast in a cab and get some good gun games, it would be really cheap and easy.

FYI... Dreamcast guns work on arcade monitors. I played HOTD II and Confidential Mission on my DC Cab that I am still working on. I had to turn up the contrast to get the guns to register better, but they worked flawlessly.

If you're talkin' a real, arcade-style, put-the-quarters-in-and-beat-the-hell-out-of-it type air hockey - if you're lucky, you can find them between $700 - $1,000 on eBay locally.

Air hockey is great but BUBBLE hockey - now you're talkin'! :notworthy:

I've decided against an Air Hockey table, for now anyway.  I don't have the room(or cash) for one.  I don't really have the room(or cash) for another game either, but I need to satisfy the voices in my head.

Here are some more questions:
How easy can you calibrate the guns?
If the gun isn't accurate I'm assuming that's correctable.
If the shots can't be seen on screen is that correctable?
How easy is it to replace a gun?
Happs has the guns but I don't know if they just need to be plugged in.

Chad, what's a model 2 boardset?

I've been thinking about adding a infrared light gun to my custom cabinet, but that's to practical and space efficient.  The voices don't approve.  They require another refrigerator size box that only plays one game.
But if I can swap out boards(easily) that would make this purchase a little easier to make.

You can calibrate the guns in the test menu. If your shots aren't registering on the screen it could be that the screen brightness needs adjusted. You need to have the cab in an area that wwill not get hit with direct sunlight because that will mess up the guns registering.

Replacing a gun is really easy. You just need to unbolt it from the cab and unplug it from the PCB. I replaced the guns on my LE II with some cheapers guns on Ebay. They look and play just like the ones from Happ, but were only $25 per gun.

Chad, what's a model 2 boardset?

Sega - House of the Dead and Virtua Cop 1 and 2.  Not expensive anymore for the platform boardset, it supports a lot of other great non-gun games, and those three gun games are top of the genre.  Really good price-quality ratio.

May require a medium res monitor or a way to convert the signal to standard res, which wouldn't be hard.

Getting a model 2 boardset, then putting HOTD 2 in it, is a good way to go.

Only problem with that is completely retrofitting the cab with the different light gun type.  HOTD had regular style light guns, HOTD2 has this funky expensive infrared system with a surround for the monitor.

Yeah, I corrected that in my latest post... HOTD2 isn't a Model 2 game anyway.  Only HOTD1.  HOTD 2 is Naomi, much more expensive.

Here's the results to today's auction in Chicago:

Area 51 (6) - $250 - $325
Invasion the Abductors (2) - $250
Police Trainer (1) - $325
Sports Shooting(2) - $150, $175
*Both games were low quality, but running
Trophy Hunting (1) - $500
Trophy Hunting Fullsize (1) - 325
Deer hunter USA (1) - $300
Wing Shooting (1) - $315
Big Buck Hunter (1) - $400
Police 911 (1) - $800
*The gun didn't seem to work at all
The House of the Dead (1) - $650
Carn Evil 2 player (1) - $250
*The guns were useable but had sever cosmetic damage.
Point Blank (1) - $250

I only kept track of the games I thought were buyable.  Games that didn't turn on, or were severely damaged I ignored.

Air hockey tables varied from $200 to $1000, I didn't look at them so I wasn't sure what the conditions were.

Unfortunately I didn't bid on some of the cheaper games I wanted because I was rolling the dice that I'd be able to win later auctions.  Those later games went higher than I was willing to pay for them.

I have a better idea of what to look for and pay at the next auction.

Thanks for your help.
