Looks great.  Makes me want to get started on the Taito cabinet taking up space in my dining room.

21" monitor fits?  Very interesting...

Did you use any part of the original, metal CP?

That's a beautiful cab. Very inspiring. However, I'd change the joysticks to balltops.

21" fits nicely, you could go with a 22" no problem.

No, I tossed the old CP's and made some MDF ones from scratch. It would have been impossible to mount a trackball in the old ones.

Good call on the ball-tops, I'll try them on the second CP. ;)

Not exactly ball tops, but I have been working on some extra bat tops. I don't currently have the ability to turn a perfect ball. I can look into making a ball turning attachment for my lathe. Turning a perfect sphere is one of the most difficult things you can do without CNC. Sounds like a project.  ::)

very nice work.   I also use laminate, make sure you let the contact cement get tacky before you put the laminate down and use a laminate roller.  I used the vertical grade.

Thanks. What did you think of the thinner vertical grade stuff? I expect you would have to get your glue very even so as to not have any bumps, etc transfer through.

The water-based contact cement goes on white and turns clear when it's ready, one more great thing about it.  ;)

I like that water based idea, have to try that out next time.  I have no problems with the thinner stuff, just have to be very careful with it since it can break very easy.  As for the glue I just brush it on and use a laminate roller to smooth it out.  Looks perfect than.
I b**ch. People listen!!

:woot  I have a chance to pick up one of these cabs for $25 localy.  Was being used for MKIII and it still has everything except the monitor and game board.  I might need to bug you for more information on your trackball mount.

How deep was the 21" pc monitor before you decassed it? I am assuming you used the short neck versions that are available up in Canada.  I have a 21" that has been sitting for a while that has NO WAY (at least as far as I can see) of fitting in there without cutting up the door.

BTW, I had finally decided on restoring mine to Jungle King...you bastard. Why did you have to go and make this beautiful thing!!!!!!! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

How well does the monitor bezel fit the monitor? Do you have a closeup picture of it?

The monitor I used in these is a Cornerstone C1035. Looks like they are about 19" deep with the case still on.

I trimmed the old bezel that came with the Taito to fit the new monitor so it's tight against the tube. This is how it ends up looking from the front..

Defiantly looking good.  Wish I was able to get my hands on the cab I mentioned before.  Somebody got in just before I did and bought it for $16. :hissy:  :badmood:

Still in awe of your work and hope to do something on this level soon.

Lots of these cabinets out there though. I'm sure you'll find one.

BTW I have finished cabinet #2 except I can't find the  bezel..guess it's time to clean up the car-hold.

Did the cab have a messed up footing, that you replaced; or did you put it on to make it taller?

Yea the footings were rotten on both cabinets.

I built stronger ones out of 2x4's instead of the 3/4" ply and laminated them. Should last forever.

It's amazing how nice the laminate cleans it up.  Does a pattern/flush bit cut through it like butter?

Yep.  I worked in a cabinet shop for a while in my youth and they used routers and flush trim bits for all the laminate cutting.

WOW!! Awesome work as always!  :applaud: I have been trying to figure out a way to "refit" my own Taito Cab (QIX) as the "Maimster Machine" is SO in need of plastic surgery and your clean CP's have impressed me. I have been struggling with ways to make room for a trackball without doing major demolition. Is that a standard 3" trackball?

Yea that is a 3" Happ trackball. Some tricky routing involved to fit it in there.
Had to remove so much CP material that I had to add a piece of wood behind it for strength.

Just realized that I never took a picture of the finished 'twins' together. :(
One is now part of my livingroom, the other was shipped off to Calgary..

Knievel - definitely a top-rate build! The cabinets look so clean and simple - definitely something to be proud of!

-The labels are from MikeD, I bought them before he disappeared. :'(

Do you know what happened to MikeD?  I was able to get some labels from him a while back, but I was wanting some more.  If he's gone, I'm sunk!

Thanks.

Fantastic work, truly an inspiration

just a couple quick questions:

What did you use as the black spacer between the cp and the admin panel and the admin panel and the bezel?

What is the name of the waterbased laminate adhesive? (that sounds awesome)

Thanks so much!

Thanks, nothing pops like colored t-mold on a black cabinet..especially good old blue. ;)

Answers:

- No I haven't talked to Mike in some time. He did some repro decals for my Chexx machine before Christmas and haven't been in touch since. There is another fellow in the b/s forum, Pongo, that is doing button labels now. I would try and contact him.

- The spacer between the admin panel and the CP is actually the factory Taito piece. The one between the admin panel and the monitor glass is a piece of vinyl trim from Home depot. I think it was actually for finishing the raw end of wall paneling. It came white and I gave it a coat of flat black spray, follwed with a coat of Satin clear. After it was done I pushed it onto the end of the monitor glass and slid it into place.

- The water-based contact cement is a LePage product, got it at Home Depot. Here's a link.. http://www.lepage.com/products/detail.asp?catid=23&subid=92&plid=293&PID=653

Where I work (and where I check these forums from mostly) I have a vinyl cutter.  I could pick up some adhesive vinyl, and cut the same stuff MikeD was cutting, if there is a need/desire for it.

It may take a little bit for me to get the vinyl in, and do some testing to make sure I know what I'm doing...but I'd be willing to try.  (not much of an investment, when using work machines   ;D)

I'll make a post about it somewhere else if I decide to get it going.

The decal (or whatever you call it) on the surface of the control panel... what is it printed on?  I'm used to seeing flat ones with plexi covering them, or metal ones - but since it rounds the edge like that, I'm guessing it's some tough adhesive backed vinyl sort of stuff.  Except I'd think vinyl might wear.  So... uh... what is it?

Knievel,

I just acquired one of these cabinets myself.  It had been converted to a 1943 Battle of Midway, covered in grey laminate and was not working at all.  I sent you a PM asking som questions, I hope you can answer them when you get a chance.  I am taking some inspiration from this project and hopefully transferring it to my own.
