MY First Scatch project - Custom Bubble Bobble
« on: April 06, 2007, 06:36:51 pm »

This is my first atempt of building a Mame cab. Ive gone for a bubble bobble theme thats brightly coloured to to look pleasing to the wife. Lucky for me she's agreed it looks good and has let me keep it upstairs

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this forum, its been a great help.

This has taken me around 12 weeks to complete, built from MDF, 4mm laminate for the screen bezel and controls, The art work was adapted from the localarcade website which is awesome.

Its running Mamewah and just arcade games using a 17" LCD and sony amp/surround sound with subwoofer.(Asteriods sounds amazing!)

That's a cute little cab, if I wern't so cheap I think I would build one of those LCD depth units myself.  I don't really have the space for the Dynamo cab that I am going to use, but I have it, and a monitor so I'll be ok.  You said you used laminate on the cp and bezel, does that mean that the sides are painted?  It's shiny, nice.

Good job

Looks great.  I think we will be getting alot more of these "thin" cabs in the future as they don't intrude on the existing space as much as the full size units.  Much more spouse/sig other/etc frendly.

None of the cabinet is painted, i have used laminate all the way through, you can get all sorts of patterns, colours etc. Its by a company called 'Fablon' and is available in most D.I.Y shops in the U.K.
The size being not so deep has allowed me to keep it in the house, which is a bonus as the garage is way to cold in the winter for gaming

Beautiful job, very well done.  :applaud:

I'll second what BobA said. I've been building nothing but thin cabinets since the Woody, people love them.

That is a damn nice job especially for a first cab. My fist one didn't look half that good. The only thing I don't like so much is the candy photo art but It still is very cool.   Nice job  :notworthy:

Coincidentally I just bought a Bubble Bobble that was housed in a Rally-X cabinet. I'm restoring the Rally-X and trying to decide if I want to keep the Bubble Bobble board or not.

Thanks for all of the feedback, its a great feeling to get good comments on something you make. Normally i would be just bumming around on xbox live wasting my time away, but ive got the bug now.

My friends thought i was crazy and laughed at the idea of making a machine, now they love it and want one themselves.

I fancy a go at a replica Pacman next

P.S love the neon mame.....very well finished.
