Just turned on my Billabs BL27CB0P
« on: September 06, 2006, 11:14:17 pm »
Wow.

I'm running this on an ArcadeVGA version 2 (AGP). Before I installed the TriSync utility from Ultimarc, there was substantial flicker at 1024x768 (and it was running at 200hz!! Apparently the max for the monitor is 90hz, so could leaving it on for a few minutes at 200hz damage it?). After the utility was installed and the refresh rate turned WAY down, the picture was BEAUTIFUL. I have never seen a better looking Windows desktop.

After running Avres, I loaded up some MAME games. They all look incredible. Frogger in horizontal mode is definitely cool, and the MK games look better than I remember.

The monitor itself came in at 90 pounds. I needed to sneak it into a 25" cabinet, so I has a special bracket made up. Lucky for me the monitor only sticks out the back of the cabinet by 1/2" -- perfect to put a vent grill on top of! Since the monitor screen is truly flat, I installed some shims about a 1/16" out from the screen where some black-framed glass will rest.

The only problem so fat is that the monitor makes the dreaded high frequency whine like most CRTs. I have not yet tried turning on the monitor inside the closed cabinet, but out of the box, on my kitchen table, I could faintly hear that the thing was on from a room away. My only concern now is that the AVGA defaulted the monitor to 200hz off a clean install and it damaged something. I have a feeling I'm in the clear, however, because the monitor never barked, and the picture looks perfect.

See Bob Roberts' page on "singing monitors".

Okay, so I'll try sliding a toothpick in between the FBT and the ferrite... Thanks, Ken.

My next remark is about the setting of 200hz for this monitor on my AVGA prior to running the TriSync utility. This would cause the monitor to operate at a frequency four times that which it was designed for... I highly doubt that the monitor would last after a couple seconds, let alone a few minutes. Perhaps it was just a glitch in the drivers -- it reported 200hz but was operating at something different.

I'd also like to think that a brand new monitor like this one would turn the scan off if the voltages were four times that of normal.

I had the dimensions of the monitor, but have currently misplaced them. I think they are reported elsewhere in these forums. As for the cost of the monitor, it was $650USD.

Most digital monitors will turn things off if you run them out of the range they're designed for.  They're much like PC monitors in this regard, actually.  My Kortek will definately just come up with a "you messed up" message if you try to make it do something that's out of range.

The Billabs should do the same (and if it still works, it probably did - something that far off would usually cause damage pretty quick).  There have been reports of Billabs monitors not protecting themselves during mode switches, but fireworks seem to be involved in thse cases.

No, I was in the states for a week as it was, and just picked it up from a distributor -- no duties either :)
