Candy Cabinet to use with a Dreamcast
« on: August 30, 2006, 11:20:15 am »
Can anyone suggest a good candy cabinet with monitor to use with my dreamcast. I know that I will need to have a DC to Jamma harness, but thats about all I know. What type of monitor will work good with the DC? Are there any setups that would take advantage of the DC VGA adaptor?

Thanks

Arn

If you want VGA output from Dreamcast then a Sega NAOMI Universal, Taito Egret III, Atomiswave or such with a 31Khz VGA monitor.  If you want RGB 15Khz then other cabinets will be okay like Sega New Astro City, Konami Windy, SNK Super Neo, Taito Egret II.

Have a look http://candycabinetcity.com/

Some fine examples of this over on killercabs.com sometimes, they make me drool hard. Stuff like vertical monitor Ikaruga systems.

My vertical Dreamcast cab is a Windy and I love it. Sure it'd be nicer if it was a VGA monitor but it still looks damn nice.

Im using my dreamcast on a standard res monitor in a super neo 29 cabinet and I think it looks ok. Just never look at a dreamcast hooked up to a hi res monitor and you wont know what your missing. I made the mistake of hooking mine up to a blast city cabinet that I had already agreed to sell.  Now every time I play it on the standard res monitor I know how good it could be on a hi res monitor.
I don't know if you know this but I'm sort of a big deal. I own many leather bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Does it still look better than a TV w/ S-Video?

I think its about the same. Its hard to tell because with the candy cab I sit alot closer than I would with a tv.

There is a huge ammount of difference with a Hi-res monitor vs a std res monitor with the DC. I have a horizontal candy (CROWN hi-res) and a vertical (Windy std-res) and the DC looks good on both but the nod definitely goes to the hi-res monitor. I frequently change the orientation of the monitors to play verticals in hi-res as well.

What is the price dif going from the standard to the hi res monitor?

Basically this is going to be used for alot capcom games. Street Fighter Alpha, Vamp Chron, SFIII etc... Others games such as GGX, Ikaruga, and a few others that translate over to the control scheme of a cabinet.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. They are deeply appreciated.

Just FYI:

The three capcom fighters you mention there are not high-res games.  When you play these on a VGA monitor it scales the graphics up.  Some people actuall dislike this as it over-emphasises the "blockiness" of the games.  You won't gain anything playing these on a 640x480 hi-res cabinet over a low-res cabinet.

GGX and Ikaruga on the other hand look superb on a high-res monitor.

I'd give a double nod to using the hi-res for the Vertical games.  I can't think of any vert shooters except for Gunbird 2 that can be TATED and wouldn't benefit from the higher resolution.  Horizontal games, the capcom fighters mentioned as a perfect example, would make a better case of using std resolution instead of high.

YMMV of course.

Question,

Don't the higher res monitors output a brighter pic as well? I understand the standard res vs. high res on those games, as I'm used to playing my DC on a VGA monitor so I notice the resolution difference.

Regardless, if the majority of my games that I am going to be playing on the DC are going to be standard res capcom games, if I get a standard res monitor in the candy cab, will I just use a DC to jamma conversion for this?

And still I am wondering, what the price diff is on the standard monitor candy cabs vs. a high res one.

Thanks

Arn

To give you an idea, a guy in Southern LA sells a lot of these candy cabs.  You can get a standard resolution Astro City for around $475.  He also sells a highres Atomiswave (Egret 3 model) for $1500.

In contrast, you could upgrade an existing cab with WG or Betson Tri-Res monitor for $400-$500.

Got it.

Sounds like for the price and what I am going to be playing, that a standard res monitor would suit my needs just fine.

My two candy cabs are sitting side by side right now. If you'd like I can snap a pic of the same DC game running on both a hires monitor and a std res

I've had some real world life things delay the pics but tomorrow afternoon is looking like it is very do-able.

Neat. I'm not afraid to say that Goz's enthusiastic posts made me go buy a dreamcast. Definatly don't regret it.

Where does one usually get a Candy Cab?  I'm interested in a Sega Aero City for a DC cab.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Dave, thanks for sharing. I don't recognize that second pic game but the third looks like Shikigami No Shiro 2, been wanting to pick that up. Good stuff.
