Scorpion3 Light Gun- PS1 or PS2?
« on: August 22, 2005, 06:35:37 pm »
I hate to bring up a light gun topic, but I want to experiment with the Scorpion3 light gun, but it needs a power source.  I was thinking about getting a PS2 with a bad drive or something jsut to get power to the guns, but then someone said that they thought that it worked with the older, original PlayStation (1, not 2).  Can someone confirm this please so that I know if I will be set with a regular PlayStation or not.

Thanks!

Yes, it will work with either.

that seems like a lot of trouble unless you have a Playstation laying around.  Why not just find out voltage the guns require and use a battery / your PC power supply?

If you go the power supply route you need 9VDC on pin 5 of the PS connector. You can use 12VDC from your PC power supply run through a 7809 voltage regulator to get that. That's all the homemade circuit you need. If you want a plug & play though you can get an old PS with a bad drive for a couple of bucks so it's really not a big difference if you have the room for the PS to sit in your cabinet.

For testing (and possible use - not sure of the power draw) someone on the guncon hack webpage was using a bog standard 9V battery (the rectangular ones with connectors on top)

It should work for quite a while on one battery, the draw isn't great. Just completed this myself, since I didn't want to leave the old PS on all the time, or have to turn it on.

If it quits tomorrow will let you know :)
