If you aren't cutting curves, you don't want to use a jigsaw.

Your best bet would be a circular saw, with a saw guide clamped in place to guide it.

I am assuming you used the right bits when you tried to drill through a brick. Generally one would use a special masonry bit...

wait a minute...

are you drilling a hole in a brick??? :-\

Firstly, before getting a proper tool such as yourself, I suggest an "Engrish to English" dictionary so they can understand what you're looking for.  Next, go to a hardware store.  All you require can be found there, but all that you find there may not be required.  When you understand, glasshoppel, you will be ready.to ask more lame questions

Make sure your blade/bit/whatever is sharp.

I've been working with some Hardie Panel lately, which is like a cross between MDF and Cinderblocks - they let you know up front that it eats blades.  Later I took my saw and tried to cut a piece of plywood in half.  The edge was like a sine wave - the harder I'd try to keep it straight the shorther the wavelength.  I put in a new blade - arrow straight cuts.

You won't get very far drilling through brick without a hammer drill, anyways.

If you're cutting straight lines you want a circular saw of some sort.

Nope, just buy the biggest one in each class and declare yourself the winner.

(Does not apply to tools with sizes - wrenches spring to mind.  A 1-1/2 wrench is not what you'd call super useful in most aplications.)

This man speaks the truth!!!

I've never used a jigsaw for a box. I only use a jigsaw to cut out large circles(ie: speaker holes over 4").

Stingray, you have much to learn.  I'm not saying that you DON'T have to buy every tool in the world.  I'm saying HE doesn't have to buy every tool in the world.  They will simply kornfuse him to no end.  Grapes are a mind-bender, I'd bet ;D

Nope, just buy the biggest one in each class and declare yourself the winner.

::)  I cannot believe it.  You cannot simply buy the biggest one and call yourself the winner.  There are numerous tools that require purchase of both the biggest AND of "backups".  What tools might those be?

* DrewKaree looks over his shoulder to see if anyone's spying in on the conversation

pssst.  ALL of them!

If I've got the biggest saw, AND a backup (or three), and you've only got the biggest saw, it's quite clear that not only do I win, but it also makes you a sally (or a nancy, take your pick) and you aren't even in a position to stumble across the finish line.

Send it to me.  You have no creativity, and all your tools and your tool-carrying/owning license should be revoked.  There is no reason on this earth that a man presented with the option to purchase a 11/2" wrench shouldn't take it....and purchase a backup, in case that one gets lost.

C'mere, I think after re-reading my rant, I've found a "use" for that wrench.....this'll only hurt for a few days....ready?

you can buy a jigsaw for $30-$35 at home depot.... and a circular saww for about the same... buy the correct blade for whatever your application and you'll be fine.... a good drill might cost a bit more.. but it can be used for a million things... i am partial to my craftsman 19.2volt.....

I cut my 1st panles out with a brand new laser line jigsaw and wasnt happy with the results. I bought some more material and as I didnt have a circular saw I used a handsaw and produced perfect cuts.

Only 1 gigantic table saw, jointer and planer?  I thought you were serious about this hobby.  Where are your backup machines, Sally?

:-D

(very nice equipment by the way)

Way to take notice of how the game is played, AceTKK, and two thumbs WAY up on the proper use of the "Sally".  Excellent work all around!

Nice try, thanks for playing, Alice ;) ;D

Just managed to pick myself off the floor from laughing at the previous posts. Good stuff!

Seriously though, in reply to the first post, MDF is about the easiest stuff to saw and probably doesn't need power tools at all. Provided you mark out your cutting line in pencil accurately and use a some sort of right angle as a guide you can use hand saws such as a cross-cut saw and for internal corners a pad saw. These are really cheap and really not that much effort to use to cut soft mdf.

If your power drill acts as a screwdriver it is probably intended for light work not for drilling through bricks. Should manage a bit of MDF though
Cheers

You're starting to get the hang of it, but only with help.  I bet that's not the only thing you.....wait, getting too out of hand.  ;)  Keep trying Martha, you can almost take your helmet off indoors ;D

Lightweights :-*

See below for the sawdust pile from my last project... errrrm... Marcy.

Swing and a miss....almost had it, but this ain't Scrabble.  No adding a letter "just because".  End of line!  NEXT!

Ha - you must have built your project with MDF...

(Matilda)

You're really coming on strong, and with that offering, I declare Matilda to be suitable, although if there weren't none of them dirty Aussies here, we wouldn't have to use names they kin unnerstan' ;D Bones, tell me Mrs Bones isn't named Matilda!

I can carry two machines under each arm, Shaniqua.

EXCELLENT addition for ease of "rolling off the tongue" and usage of the letter "Q".  Deemed suitable for future use :D

Holding them in place with the glue oozing from your armpits doesn't count, Bertha.

Clearly a wild attempt, and something you needn't go "off the reservation" to try to slip in there.  Common, and passed over long ago.  I hereby deem you Nancy Alice.

If at all possible, the approved names should be used in as many posts as possible when replying to Zakk.  Not only is it appropriate, but he's funny when he's confused, so it's also a "home entertainment system".  Please advise as many members as possible.

Just managed to pick myself off the floor from laughing at the previous posts. Good stuff!

Seriously though, in reply to the first post, MDF is about the easiest stuff to saw and probably doesn't need power tools at all. Provided...  etc.
Cheers

How dare you interrupt our important posts with an on-topic answer! You, you, YOU... Nancy! (pauses to check approval list) What!

I would like to formally request a variance for the use of Nancy in the previous statement.

Miss Karee,

I would like to formally protest this deduction in points as my post CLEARLY has a misspelled word in it. Obviously I MEANT to say "Mary".

Nancy has been previously used.  Proceed with impunity.

As in golf, the honor system applies.  There are no points, Sally, only ridicule/derision/shame, whichever comes first ;)

And I'm married.  That's Mrs Karee to you!

You are hereby deemed to be knowledgeable of any and all rules.  Expecting an apology, however, will net you a smack in the puss and the formal name in perpetuity of "Betty Nugs"

This topic needs to be moved to "Everything Else", on the grounds that Drew has posted in it.

I bet next you're gonna whine about how you can't carry a machine under each arm.

You know that Jeff Foxworthy line, about if your tools are worth more than your car?

My tools WEIGH more than my car.
