Here in CT there aren't that many arcades. There are a few vendors around, but the chances of finding someone who's selling a cab for cheap, let alone throwing it out or giving it away, are slim to none.
Yup, you're a n00b. No offense. Lemme 'splain:
New England is like the capital for arcade related stuff. There's a massive network of collectors, guys selling stuff, guys giving away stuff, auctions (every once in a while).
So if you're looking for arcade stuff in NE, and you haven't found anything, you're looking in the wrong places.
For example: I've got four cabinets, and one actual non-converted game. Of those four, three were free. One was a complete JAMMA game (that I've since converted to a Mame cabinet) that I got for $130. And the other game was 'Sega Space Attack' that I got for free (but had to drive three hours each way to get it).
Places to try:
- read RGVAC (that's rec.games.video.arcade.collecting) either thru your ISP's newsserver, or thru http://groups.google.com
- read right here. People post stuff here once in a while.
- http://hartford.craigslist.com. Although usually you won't find much there, it's still a source.
- Kevin @ K&S Amusements is out of CT, down near Enfield, IIRC. He gives away cabs once in a while, and sells decent empties for a little $$$. Contact him, he may have something for you.
