Easy Marquee Request
« on: April 16, 2004, 10:44:47 am »
Need a marquee for a cab I'm working on.  I'd like to use that character explosion background, with 'ARCADE CLASSICS' (all caps) as the text.  Nice and simple, like to see some examples of fonts for this.  The size of the marquee is 23.75" x 7.5"

Gunship is a good font that's all caps.

There's also a ton of free fonts here.

Very sweet!  I have to go to Kinkos now!

How about one that replaces the 'C's with Pac-Man?

Here's one I've been playing around with. I got the font from www.blambot.com , he sells very professional comic-style fonts and has a collection of free ones too.

Man!  That rocks!  Can you make the font in a bluish to match the background colors?

Heck, no!  You hit it on the head with this one:

Edit: didnt' realize there were two stuck together.  I was referring to the one on the bottom.

Where can I get the original from?

And thanks to everyone that has been helping me with this!  Of course, everyone is welcome to use the marquee if it suits you.

I might want to use that for one of my projects as well.

JoyMonkey...I love the font and the look of those marquees.  I'd also like to know where I could get the original (full size) copy of the last marquee.  I agree with Peale, I like the blue letters the best.

I'll set up a web page with all the marquees I did today available at full size (600dpi).
Should be up in a little while at:
http://mame.joymonkey.com/marquees

EDIT: the last three marquees are now available at the web-page mentioned above.
If anyone decides to use them, please let me know how the finished product turns out.

JoyMonkey,
Any chance you would be able to share the photoshop or illustrator (whatever you created the file in) file or give step by step instructions on how you modified that font to look so good?  I'd like to use this marquee (or similar) but have matching side art, so I'd need to be able to reproduce the same effect.

Thanks,
drunkatuw

I used CorelDraw to make the lettering (I used to hate Corel with a passion, but was forced into it at work and now it's all I use for vector work, I find it a lot easier and faster than Illustrator).
I used PhotoShop to scale and crop Rom's background to the right size and then imported it into Corel.
Here's a PDF detailing how I did the lettering. You can achieve the same effect using Illustrator just as easy, but my brain no longer thinks in Illustrator. Hopefully it makes some sense.

I'll second that request.  I followed your instructions and got to step 5 and I'm lost.  Your marquees look great, I would love to use one of yours but I want to personalize the text and background.

Alright!  A fellow Coreldrawer guy.

In step 5:
Converting the Outline (stroke) to an object is the last option in the Arrange dropdown (Ctrl+Shift+Q).
You should noticed that there are now three outlines of everything in Wireframe mode.  The outer and inner comprise the outline and the inner the original lettering.  (Outlines grow from the original border in and out - whereas Contour just grows outward or just inward)
Taking the letter "D" as an example, choose one of the middle wireframes of the outside of the letter, hold shift and choose the middle wireframe of the inside of the letter.  It should say 2 Objects Selected on Layer 1 down in the bottom.
In the Arrange dropdown, pick Combine (or rightclick on the object then Combine).  Now the letter D is solid again.  Meaning it will show the hole in the center when colored.

To easily move object in front of and behind each other I find it easier to use Shift+PgUp or +PgDn to move them all the way to the front or back.  Ctrl+PgUp or +PgDn to move them front and back one step at a time.
Next I'll be on fries, and that's when the big money starts rolling in.

I just thought I'd throw some ideas out there for those using photoshop instead of corel draw.  I've managed to get my marquee to look very similar to JoyMonkey's (except for the pacman font 'C').

Steps:
1. Use the given whoopass font that joymonkey linked to above.
2. You need to do this each letter individual in photoshop (gets kind of repetative).
3. Use font tool to create 'A' (pick your own size (I used around 230pt).
4.  Layer-> Layer Stlye -> Stroke...
5.  stroke size around 40px
6.  Fill type gradient (I got the exact colors of joymonkey's font bye using the eye drop tool (very handy!)
7.  Layer -> Layer Style -> gradient overlay (again use the eye drop tool too match colors or pick your own).
8.  Layer -> Layer Style -> Inner shadow.  Angle around 45, size around 40px, left all other settings at default.
9.  Play around with layer transform (ctrl+T) to adjust size of all letters and move layers around to put correct layers on top

below is an in-progress jpg.  Let me know if it looks ok.

Edit:  I just found out that you can copy layer styles by going to Layer-> Layer Style-> copy layer style and then select the new layer and go to Layer-> Layer Style-> paste layer style and then repeat for each layer, you only need to copy once though.  Made it go rather quickly for me.

I tweaked the process above by adding a inner and outer glow to create a black outline of the "stroke" to create a better edge between the different letters similar to joymonkey's.  Here is what I have right now (almost final).

Like the artwork, but my opinion is that the light source should be the same for both the artwork and lettering.  In your case the light is coming from behind the lettering in the middle and the shade might look better that way.  Again, just my preference.

Good luck

Man, I'm ticked.  I took the image to the sign printer for him to do.  I told him exactly what it was for, and how it would be mounted.  He said it would take him a week.

A week came and went.  I called (on a Saturday AM) and left a message wondering where it was.

Then I went on vacation.

I got back, and the first thing I did was check phone messages.  Only one, from the guy, saying that my marquee was ready.  The message was left on a Friday, two weeks after I dropped it off, and a week after he said it would be done.

I drag the kids down the shop, only to find he made a sticky backed sign.  It looks great, no doubt, but he printed it forwards, and it needs to be printed BACKWARDS!  Something that was made very clear.

So now I have to wait - AGAIN - for this to be printed.  Says it'll take another week.

It's a good thing this isn't the final piece of the puzzle.

Here's a follow-up request: side art.  Side art that looks like this marquee.  So it matches the cabinet.

Im assuming the text is tilted for a reason.  I dunno...just doesn't look right to me.  Probably because the tilt is so slight.

Of course once it's mounted it could be turned in any direction.  But yeah, that looks good.

I thought the words needed a little rotation, seeing as every little octagonal piece is flying out at a different angle it gives it a sense of movement with the pieces.
But then again, this isn't going on my cab...
